  2. Making Resolutions… • 2 Chronicles 20:3, • Daniel 1:8, • Psalm 17:3, and • 1 Corinthians 2:2.

  3. How Is Your Resolve?

  4. Psalm 17:3 on page 854 • Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.

  5. Paul’s Resolve: • To be grounded in Jesus and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.

  6. 1 Corinthians 2:2 Page 1772 • For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. • God’s Word Translation: While I was with you, I decided to deal with only one subject-Jesus Christ, who was crucified.

  7. Corinth: • Paul keeps to the basics of the good news and grounds them in the word about Jesus, the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and unity.

  8. 1 Corinthians 1:18 • For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

  9. 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 • Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

  10. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 • When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

What Can it Look Like? • We center ourselves on God’s word. • Our focus is on Jesus and being faithful to him so we work at being seeker sensitive not seeker driven. • We focus on Bible study for application not just information. • We expect change and growth from people. • We look to Jesus’ crucifixion and what it teaches us about grace, sin, death, and a new life.

  12. We encourage one another to live a crucified life surrendered to God and his word. • We expect people to be in God’s word and to meet with others. • We preach grace and its cost as we offer it to each other. • We surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit and know that our message only makes sense with him.

  13. Today’s passage is one about truly focusing on Jesus. • How well do you do with that? • What helps you clarify your focus and what blurs the image?

  14. 2 Timothy 2:22-26Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

  15. Luke 9:62Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

  16. Revelation 3:15-16 • I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

  17. Working It Out… • Have the resolve of Jehoshaphat. • Have the resolve of Daniel. • Have the resolve of David. • Focus on Jesus and him crucified and what that really means to you, your purpose in life, and for others who do not know him.

  18. Conclusion! • I hope you received what God wanted you to receive from this series. • Where you were commended, keep going, and where you were corrected, keep trying!
