Equal Employment Opportunity Commission • What is the EEOC and what is it all about? • The EEOC stands for Equal Employment Opportunity Commission • They support job candidates and employees against employers discriminating against them due to: • age, race, disability, or sex according to federal law. • employers can’t discriminate against an employee filing, participating, or complaining about a discrimination that happened in the workplace.
Sexual Harassment • Unwelcome sexual advances • Requests for sexual favors • Other verbal or physical harassment • EEOC involvement in sexual harassment case only if the company has 15 or more employees • Quid Pro Quo: sexual favors are requested with a reward of advances in the workplace
In Relation to Lake Tahoe we come to……………………….
Destination Tahoe Hotel: Resort at Squaw Creek • Opened on December 20, 1990 • Houses 405 luxury rooms and suits • Located on 195 hillside acres beneath Mammoth peaks of Squaw Creek • Features: • Restaurants • Outdoor hot tubs • Health and fitness center • Exclusive on-property chair lift • Golf course
How Sexual Harassment is Applied to Resort at Squaw Creek • A male co-worker harassed a female food server by wanting to see her outside of the work place and touching her inappropriately • Resort at Squaw Creek ignored the female worker’s complaints and demoted her to a part-time bartender position • Resort at Squaw Creek will pay $30,000 to the female employee, strengthen it’s sexual harassment policies, mandate annual training to its supervisors/managers, and have agreed to report any job discrimination complaints to the EEOC
Relevance to Today’s Office Professionals • Anyone can be sexually harassed • Male or female • Student or teacher • Employee or boss • Avoid being accused • Know what qualifies as sexual harassment • Keep to yourself in the workplace
How to Report Sexual Harassment • Review your employee handbook • Determine who to report to • Request a face-to-face meeting • Follow up in writing • Tell your employer exactly what happened and exactly what you want • Follow up on progress • Report to EEOC if no progress has been made
Tips for Avoiding Sexual Harassment • Be professional • Be assertive • Dress appropriately • Act appropriately • Avoid staying late • Do not encourage vulgarity • Form a club against sexual harassment
