Lesson 66 – Richard Snodgrass Catalina Shen Smith
Emulating Richard Snodgrass In this assignment, I tried to use some of the techniques that Richard Snodgrass uses to capture otherwise mundane objects in interesting and intimate ways. I took pictures of a few different objects including fairy lights, a little cactus plant, a brick in a sidewalk, and some of my mom’s dolls. • The techniques I experimented with were: • Unusual angles – used on the fairy lights and doll’s clothing. I also photographed the brick from an angle rather than straight on, which I thought was more interesting. Photographing the dolls as if they are looking at you makes them look alive which I found creepy. • Unique lighting and/or shadows – used on most of the photographs, but mainly when photographing the dolls. • Patterns and texture – the cactus and the brick, both had very interesting textures. • Use of color – in some photos I used more vivid colors and in others I tried to make the colors more muted to change the mood of the photos.
