About Sir Stafford Raffles Sir Stamford Raffles was the founder of colonial Singapore in the 1819.He was born on the ship “Ann” of the coast of Port Morant,Jamaica.He was in charge of searching a new port within the Malay Archipelago to protect their trading ships from India,Penang and China.On 28th of January 1819,he noticed the island Singapura.Later he knew that their biggest rival in trade,the Dutch was not on that island.This lead him to be establish a trading settlement in Singapore.He signed a treaty with the Sultan of Singapore,Sultan Tengku Hussien and Temenggong Abdul Rahman.
What is some of the greatest things he has done. After Sir Stamford Raffles founded Colonial Singapore,the was a stir between the British and the Dutch.Both parties were fighting for the ownership of Singapore.Raffles himself fought hard to keep his new settlement.He also establish a trading settlement in Benkulu(Bencoolen) and Penang.
History Of Clarke Quay During the years of colonial Singapore,Clarke Quay was used as a place to keep all the cargoes because of its many warehouses there.Cargoes were being brought up to Clarke Quay by small boats called barge lighters.As more barge lighters were used to ferry more cargoes up the Singapore River,the river has been polluted.Because of this,the Singapore government relocated a new place to keep the cargoes.When a new modern facility opened in Pasir Panjang,Clarke Quay became silent.
