Welcome to our school!!! • As a first time Brunswick Middle School volunteer, we ask that you please read through this presentation to familiarize your self with our procedures. • After completing your read through, please print out and complete both the Confidentiality and Medical Emergency forms(found at the end of the presentation) and return them to the office to be turned into the PTO. • If you are not able to print, please email the PTO to make arrangements for it to be printed for you. • Please feel free to send questions via the PTO website or school as you go along.
Your help may include: All Chaperones and volunteers must complete this volunteer presentation, and sign the confidentiality agreement, and complete the emergency contact form prior to volunteering at any event. • Working with students • Attending field trips • Assisting with PTO functions • Making copies for teachers • Creating display cases • Assisting in the media center • Implementing PBIS incentive activities • Assisting in the Library • Running the school store • Taking Pictures for Yearbook • Other ideas???
Volunteer Attendance • As you are scheduled to be at BMS, you are a very important part of the program. • Please call the school (240-236-5400) if you are not able to attend. If you leave a message, please leave your name and where and what time you were to be volunteering so the front office staff can relay the message to the teacher or PTO. • If you can, please email the teacher or the PTO as well. Their emails can be found on their webpages.
Sign In • All visitors and volunteers must meet with office personnel and provide them with a valid State identification or Driver license. Your ID will be scanned in the Raptor system. The Raptor system will print you a badge sticker that must be displayed while volunteering at the school. • Safety is our number one priority!
LOGGING VOLUNTEER HOURS • The Raptor system will keep track of your hours while school is in session. Please be sure to keep track of your offsite or after hours volunteer hours and log them in the PTO website http://brunswickms.my-pto.org/content • Volunteer hours are tracked from May 1 through April 30, so they overlap two school years.
Why are volunteer hours so important to log and track? • Volunteer hours for your school can help your school to obtain a grant. • If you have twice the number of volunteer hours than students at your school, your school will qualify for a certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education.
Personal • Dress Code –Please dress appropriately for the task. For example, if going on a field trip, dress in comfortable walking shoes and wear attire for the weather. • Personal Belongings – Please lock personal belongings in your car. Coats may be kept in the room where you are working or ask the front office staff or teacher for assistance. • Tobacco Free Schools. There is no smoking on school property. • Personal Health Issues – If you have special issues, please provide information to the front office and this will be kept confidential. Each volunteer must fill out an emergency contact form which will be kept confidential.
Phone Calls and BYOD • We have BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at BMS. Our students have routines and expectations and staff is asked to model those expectations. • Please have cell phones on vibrate during regular school hours. • If you need to take a call, please remove yourself from student areas. • If you need to use our phone, please come to the front office.
Weapons FCPS Regulation 300-39 states that no person, unless otherwise excepted (law enforcement officers, etc.), shall carry or possess any rifle, gun, knife, or deadly weapon of any kind on any public school property in this state.
Harassment • In part, FCPS Policy 318 states that it is the policy of the BOE to maintain a learning and working environment that is free from sexual harassment. The board believes that sexual harassment is offensive and morally wrong. Therefore, the board prohibits sexual harassment of, or by, employees, students, volunteers, vendors, or others having business or contacts with the school system. The board will investigate all complaints of sexual harassment and take appropriate action to end the harassment. • Please see our Principal, Mr. Warren, Vice Principal Mr. Kibler or guidance if any concerns arise regarding harassment.
Confidentiality • What you hear and see at school in terms of student incidents, behavior, academic progress, etc. is not to be shared with others outside of the building. This also applies to any staff member in terms of confidentiality. • Contact the classroom teacher or administrator with any concerns you may have. • At the end of this presentation, please read and complete the confidentiality agreement. Provide the signed document to the Volunteer Coordinator in the front office.
Universal Precautions • In the event of a student injury or illness… • Contact the teacher • Contact the front office or health room • If there are bodily fluids, try not to touch or handle. If you must, use some form of barrier to prevent exposure. Report any exposure to the front office and/or health room. (x65359)
Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect • Please address your concerns with the teacher and/or administrator. • FCPS Regulation 400-47 notes that every school system employee or school volunteer who has reason to believe that a child has been physically or mentally abused or neglected is required by law to report the incident to the local Department of Social Services or the appropriate law enforcement agency, to the principal of the school, and to appropriate school system staff. • Please see a staff member if you suspect any abuse or neglect.
Emergencies To report any emergency, please call the front office on any school phone by dialing x65356 (240-236-5356) . If no answer please call guidance at x65362.
Fire Drills, etc. • In the event of an evacuation, everyone must leave the building immediately and exit through the nearest door. No one can re-enter the building until Administration has given the “All-Clear.”
LOCKDOWN • In the event of a lockdown, everyone MUST remain within the building until clearance has been given to leave • We are responsible for every individual within the school during a lockdown and safety during this time is crucial.
Staff Lounges • There are staff lounges in all three wings. vending machines, refrigerators and microwaves are for adult use only in those areas. There are vending machines only in the A wing staff Lounge, • Please refrain from using these areas as work areas. • Bathrooms are located by the health room, across from the media center, and off the D-wing computer lab.
Mail Room/Office Areas • If you have a note or other materials for a staff member, please give it to the front office secretary and she will be happy to place it in the staff member’s mailbox. • If you need to see any of the guidance or administrative team members, please check with the secretary in the front office.

Discipline • Discipline of any student is to be administered by the BMS Staff. • If you are working with students and a difficulty arises, let the teacher know immediately. Teachers have a system for students, “Derailment”. Please be factual in stating what the issues are so that the teacher can assist in resolving the issue using our PBIS model. • Remember: It is the behavior of the student that is disapproved of - not the student.
Respecting Instructional Time • While volunteering, please do not consider this as a time to discuss your child’s progress with the teacher. • If you need to meet with a teacher, please schedule a conference through the guidance office. • Please be respectful of teachers’ planning time as they have required meetings to attend as well as contractually they are to have uninterrupted planning time and a lunch time.
Field Trips • All chaperones must complete this volunteer training, sign the confidentiality agreement and return it to the Volunteer Coordinator in the front office. • If you have any issues with students, please tell the teachers on the field trip. • Please notify the teacher if you are unable to attend the trip.
A Code of Ethics for Volunteers • All information about children, teachers and schools is to be kept confidential • Show high regard for each child. • Be sympathetic and courteous toward all pupils. • Set a good example for your pupils in every way. • Be impartial and fair in dealing with pupils. • Refrain from imposing your own religious or political views upon pupils; exhibit a broad-minded tolerant attitude toward other groups and individuals. • Respect those with whom you work. Please sign & return the acknowledgement that you have read “A Code of Ethics for Volunteers” & the Volunteer Confidentiality Form, and return to the Volunteer Coordinator. They must be on file! BMS DANCE GUIDELINES -Safety is our main priority,please do not allow children to roam the halls, if they need to go to their locker for any reason please assist them in seeing an administrator (walking between the media center and cafeteria events is okay between the hours of 3pm and 430pm when the media center will shut down) -No food or drinks in the media center or gymnasium, this will keep our spaces clean and assist in avoiding falls -No open drinks on the dance floor -If you see a student running please ask them to stop -Ticket takers: there is a master list to check off for students who forgot their tickets, a second line will be formed for those who have them. Any issues please reach out for assistance to either Kelli Dick (has the forms) or Mr. Warren or other staff member present -Concession: a list of posted prices will be present at your booth, please assist with easy exchange of funds during the dance -Chaperones (dance floor, media center, gymnasium, outside) please keep in mind you are there for the safety and well being of the children. Any disciplinary action requiring more than a respectful verbal reminder needs to be taken to administration. Do not place your hands on a child in anger while in the school. You are the eyes to keep them safe and having fun. In addition, if you find spills, alert a custodian, Mr. Kibler or Mr. Warren so that clean-up can happen quickly -Game coordinators: please be sure that everyone is treated fairly at your station, you are there to facilitate easy flow of the game you are running. -Clean-up crew: please help us to keep the school nicer than we found it. Your job is to get in as soon as we can and clear all messes while assisting custodial staff. They are amazing!
