What is TMAL? • Created to help groom High School students for: • success on the ACT, SAT and other standardized tests • success in college freshman math/science courses. • Reinforces knowledge of Black history and inventors. • Two sections • tutorial sessions • competitions. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

TMAL Tutorial Component • The most important component of the program • Alumni and collegiate volunteers work with PCI students to develop math and science skills and to expand knowledge of Black inventors • Sessions continue throughout the NSBE year whether the students win in the competitions or not NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

  9. Pre-Assessment Test • All students participating in the program must complete a Pre-Assessment test • Used to track student progress • See the TMAL toolkit for a copy of this test NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

Progress Assessment Test • 10 problem individual tests given to each member of each team (30 minutes) • Initiated at the beginning of each competition to monitor the progress of the students • Used to gauge how successful the training sessions were prior to the competition • Regional TMAL Coordinator will grade the PAT tests NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

  11. Engineering Contest • Engineering problem based on a real-life situation (60 minutes) • Tests the teams’ ability to work together and use mathematics/science to solve a real-world problem NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

Quiz Bowl Competition • Jeopardy-style competition (2 hours) • Teams compete against each other to answer questions in the following subjects: • Black inventors           •  Problem Solving • Algebra and Functions • Geometry and Measurements • Numbers and Operations • Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS
