  2. Algebraic Equations Step 1 Distribute: Multiply the value outside of the Parenthesis by each value inside of the parenthesis. Hint: draw your arrows 4(x – 5) + 6= 2 4x – 20 + 6 = 2

  3. Algebraic Equations Step 2 Combine like terms on one side of the equal sign at a time. 4x – 20 + 6 = 2 4x – 14 = 2

  4. Algebraic Equations Step 3 Isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign By cancelling out constants. Use inverse operations, Use addition or subtraction. Hint: inverse means opposite 4x – 14 = 2 The inverse of subtraction is addition & remember Whatever you do on one Side of the equal sign, you Have to do on the other side of the equal sign +14 = +14 4x = 16

Isolate the variable using inverse operations again, either use multiplication or division. 4x = 16 The inverse of multiplication is division & remember Whatever you do on one Side of the equal sign, you Have to do on the other side of the equal sign Any number Divided by Itself is 1 4 4 1x = 4
