Direct Objects What or who the action (verb) is happening to. Answers the question “what”. Bobby kicked the ball. S V DO The ball is what is being directly affected by the action (verb). Suzy built the fence. S V DO
Indirect Objects Answers the “whom, or to whom” of the sentence. It is who is affected by the direct object, or is indirectly involved with the verb. They sent him a postcard. PN V IO DO Steve passed Suzy a note. S V IO DO
Prepositional Object This is who/what is affected by the preposition (on, off, around, near, by) Sally put on her shoes. S V P PO He ran into the street to jump in the puddle. PN V P PO V P PO
Now you try! Write 5 sentences that use ONLY a direct object. Now, change those sentences to also use an indirect object. Now, rewrite the sentences to only have a prepositional object! How did you do?
