What is the Newday Project? • Financed through a grant from the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) to NOMS Cymru • Funded to August 2012, but subject to the outcome of a review by WEFO, an extension to the project funding may be made until 2015 • The Newday Project offers innovative, holistic services to tackle economic inactivity and increase sustained employment opportunities for offenders • The Newday Project is a voluntary project offering ‘additionality’ to the current provision available • An individual cannot be mandated to attend • Outcome driven contract

  3. Who is eligible for the Newday Project? • Offenders in Welsh Prisons with less than two years to serve on their sentence • Those resident or returning to a convergence area in Wales. These areas are: • North Wales • Isle of Anglesey • Conwy • Denbighshire • Gwynedd • West & South West Wales • Pembrokeshire • Carmarthenshire • Swansea • Neath & Port Talbot • South Wales & Valleys • Bridgend • Rhondda Cynon Taf • Merthyr Tydfil • Caerphilly • Torfaen • Blaenau Gwent • Mid Wales • Ceredigion

  4. Newday Service – Case Manager role • The Newday Case Manager will work with offenders in all Welsh establishments who will be released to an address in the convergence areas of Wales, or who are either on licence or a community order or have been sentenced to less than 12 months. • A range of services will be offered to an individual, with the aim of supporting them into education, training and/ or employment.

Assistance with job applications • Weekly job searches • Signposting to appropriate courses • Direct delivery of accredited courses e.g. Health & Safety Qualification • CV writing • Setting up e-mail accounts • In-work support • Opportunities to undertake further courses to help sustain employment Case Management role

Newday Services Delivery Prime & sub –contractors • Working Links – Male offenders throughout Wales convergence areas, serving over 12 months custody or on licence, excluding BMEs, 16 to 21 year olds. Female offenders in North Wales • Wales Probation Trust – Male offenders in Gwent, Dyfed Powys and South Wales sentenced to community orders or less than 12 months custody • Rathbone – Male and female offenders throughout Wales convergence areas aged 16 to 21 years olds • VALREC – Male and female BME offenders in South Wales and Gwent • Spot Purchases will be made for Mental Health (GOFAL Cymru), Self-employment mentoring (BITC) and social enterprise support (Social Firms Wales)

Newday Mentoring Service Delivery - SOVA • The Newday Mentoring Service will derive 100% of its referrals from the Newday Services contract • It will aim to support individuals to achieve identified positive outcomes in their journey towards education or training and assist them to sustain employment opportunities identified through Newday Services • To achieve this volunteers have been recruited to offer a mentoring service • As a sub-contractor, the Wales Probation Trust will deliver this in Dyfed Powys area. All other convergence areas in Wales will be covered by SOVA

Newday Mentoring Services – Mentor role • The mentor will work closely with the case manager to deliver a seamless service to the individual • Mentors will be allocated based on specific skills they can offer and the needs the individual has in relation to education, training and employment • Motivate, encourage, build confidence and skills • Provide support, advice, guidance, act as an advocate and be a sympathetic listener • Empower customers to make positive changes in their life

How to refer to the Newday Project? • Referrals to the Newday Project will be derived from Prison and Probation offender cohorts • Offender Managers make the decision to refer to the Newday Project and incorporate Newday into the offender’s sentence plan which is then shared with allocated the Newday case manager • The referral mechanism for Newday will be START Cymru • Referrals are received by Working Links Business Support Team (BST) • Working Links BST allocate to relevant Newday provider/Mentoring Service (if appropriate) and e-mail OM to advise of details • Allocated Newday Case Manager/mentor support officer makes contact with OM to discuss offender needs before creating a Newday Action Plan on START Cymru, mindful of any needs and risks identified by OM
