Key Definitions Stereotype False or generalized beliefs about a group of people that result in categorizing members without regard for individual difference Eg: - East Asians are good at Math - Caucasians can’t dance well
Key Definitions Prejudice Set of opinions, attitudes, and feelings that unfairly cast a group and its members in a negative light, without legitimate reasons Eg: - Young Black males are all criminals
Self-fulfilling Prejudice? Certain behaviours are expected (i.e. girls are not good at Math) Expectations met and reinforced (i.e. girls have problems in math) Unequal treatment is given (i.e. teacher ignores girls’ questions) Group accepts situation (i.e. girls stop asking questions)
