Background Information • What is an “Ageing Society”? • According to the definition of the UNESCO, a country or region becomes an aging society once: • people 60 years old and older make up 10% of its population • a group of 65-year-olds and above account for 7% of the populace
Background Information • Is China an aging society now? • Yes. China has crossed the threshold of aging society by the United Nations’ criteria. The 2009demographic census statistics showed that • people aged 60 and older (167 million) already accounted for 12.5% of the general population • this number is increasing by 3 million every year. • Experts predict that the group of people aged 65 and above would make up 20%by 2035. 人口普查统计
