What is OTC? • Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are drugs you can buy without a prescription, they are safe and effective for use by the general public without seeking treatment by a health professional .
OTC • We've chosen this topic because of it’s serious impact on health , now many people use medications without prescriptions and they unfortunately don't have a clue about the side effects.
OUR GOAL : • our goal that we are hoping to decrease their use of it without medical advise by explaining to them:1-how serious are these medications.2- what are the side effects.3- emphasize on seeking medical advice.4-warning sign that should be seen in hospital.
We distributed simple questionnaire to patients in waiting area in general clinics.
Our objectives in the questionnaire are: • To see which OTC drugs are commonly use among our society. • If they and their relatives get use to prescribed for their selves. • We want to be sure if they know how serious is the problem. • If they get any side effect. • The common symptoms that they don’t seek medical advice and prefer to describe to their selves. • Then we collected the questionnaire and their phone numbers to inform them about the results
We came out from this questionnaire with the following results :
The percentage of patient who are prescribing without seeking medical advice was 82% , and 18% were not.
The common symptoms that they don’t seek medical advice for it are: • Headache 30% • Common cold 22% • Infections 19% • Cough 18% • Menstrual cramps4% • Allergy 4% • Toothache 3
The common medications used without prescription are: • Analgesics 73% • Antibiotic 14% • Cough syrup 13% • Herbals 3%
we designed a brochure and distributed it among the patients.
Two of us wrote the approval paper on Sunday 9\12\2012 to Prof. sa’ad Al-saedy to take the consent to do our campaign , and we received the paper at the same week on Wednesday. • We did our campaign on Saturday 15\12\2012 near the waiting area of outpatient clinics in first floor. Dr Mai was our supervisor & she came to support us at that day.
