Rockets Rule! PowerupJax Project Rebecca Cook 5th Grade Science/Math Teacher Pine Estates Elementary
Meet our Scientists of the Future and Math Minions for 2013-2014 Math Minons Scientists of the Future
Purpose of the PowerupJax project • Experience something new and exciting • Allow the students to use their math and science skills outside the classroom • Encourage children to work cooperatively with a partner • Get them excited about space exploration • Prepare them for the end of the year field trip to Kennedy Space Center
Just a few projects my young scientists have done so far. The students are currently growing basil and parsley to see which one will mature faster. The students are responsible for taking care of the plants and recording the data weekly.
Roller Coaster Rampage! The students were to create a safe roller coaster that included three criteria, (ex. Loop, hill, decline, incline) stayed on the track, and that stopped within ten centimeters at the end of the track. When they were done building we discussed how they could have improved their design the next time they built the coasters.
Math Minion Restaurants • Students were to come up with a menu. • They were to list all the items and price them how they wanted. • Then I gave each group a budget that they had to fall into. • This budget included both tax and tip for each restaurant. • The students learned just how much money it takes to feed their families when going out to eat.
What will your donation cover? • Rocket kits • Engines • Igniters • Wadding • Launch pad • Launch pad controller • Each student will be paired with a partner to build the rocket. Since some students are in both clubs they will only build one rocket.
THANK YOU!!!! As an educator, I know how valuable time is and that we always feel like we never have enough of it. That is why I want to take the time to thank you now for coming out tonight to support your local teachers in their efforts to better the students of our district. We all work hard everyday to make sure our students are ready for what the future brings. It takes people like you working with us to help reach those goals. I once had an administrator say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I have always felt this way and have always expressed this to my students and their parents, but this village also includes you. The students of this district need to know that they have more than just the support of their families and teachers. They need to see that the whole city is cheering them on. I hope that by coming here tonight you have been able to see just how much your donations and support can affect and help your local students , teachers, and schools.
