Overview • Market – Industrial / Aerospace / Body Shop • Distribution – Filtration / Spray Specialist • Industrial User Profile • Overspray Isn’t Dust! • Selection Factors Parts Booth
Typical Industrial Application • Finishing processes producing airborne overspray while applying protective and/or decorative coatings to items being manufactured for resale Both are conveyor booths

Paint Terminology • Thermoplastic or Thermoset • VOC • Solvent Test • Dry and Wet Mils • Flash Time
Paint Terminology – Con’t • Dry Time • Cure Time • Pot Life • 15 Degree rule • Wet on Wet
Overspray Properties vary widely, depend upon the coating’s chemistry • Hi-solids, solvent thermosets • Solvent-based, air-dry • Waterborne, thermosets • Waterborne, air-dry • Catalyzed – chemically cured • Specialty – adhesives, gel-coats
Pneumatic Controls Overspray • Is wet on arrival • May or may not dry while in the media • Droplet size ranges from <5 to >100m • May be electrically charged • Is entrained in a relatively low velocity air stream
Wood Furniture on Conveyor Overspray Selection Factors Must give consideration to Overall PROCESS needs: • Spray booth dynamics • Atomization technology • Coatings being sprayed • Disposal constraints • Regulatory constraints
Helicopter Fuselage Overspray Selection Factors Booth Considerations: • Relative location of painter, substrate, & filters • Ave. air velocity (80 – 350 FPM) & direction • Exhaust fan performance curves (determine impact loading has on air movement)

40 CFR Part 63 subpart HHHHHH • All spray booths, preparation stations, and mobile enclosures must be fitted with a type of filter technology that is demonstrated to achieve at least 98-percent capture of paint overspray. The procedure used to demonstrate filter efficiency must be consistent with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Method 52.1, “Gravimetric and Dust-Spot Procedures for Testing Air-Cleaning Devices Used in General Ventilation for Removing Particulate Matter, June 4, 1992” (incorporated by reference, see §63.14 of subpart A of this part). The test coating for measuring filter efficiency shall be a high solids bake enamel delivered at a rate of at least 135 grams per minute from a conventional (non-HVLP) air-atomized spray gun operating at 40 pounds per square inch (psi) air pressure; the air flow rate across the filter shall be 150 feet per minute. Owners and operators may use published filter efficiency data provided by filter vendors to demonstrate compliance with this requirement and are not required to perform this measurement. The requirements of this paragraph do not apply to waterwash spray booths that are operated and maintained according to the manufacturer's specifications
Aviation Market Environmental Protection Agency Test Method 319 • Aerospace & Aircraft – 319 Chromate Recovery System uses either a two- stage or three- stage paint overspray recovery system.
Disposal Considerations: • Check Coating MFG & MSDS for Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPS) • Hazardous Materials • Incinerate in cement kiln • Deposit in hazardous landfill • Non-Hazardous Materials • Sanitary landfill • Industrial boiler supplemental fuel • Any additional requirements
Summary • Understand the application, type of paint and overspray characteristics • Understand the spray booth operational specifications • Select your arrestor filter based upon efficiency, airflow and paint holding capacity – use test results • Know local, state and federal disposal regulations
