Attendance • Our students must come to school, ON TIME! • Excessive tardiesand/or absences may result in loss of privileges, an attendance hearing with the Student Conduct and Engagement Officer, or jeopardize graduation standing • Please monitor your student’s attendance and arrivals to school • Synergy • Attendance Letters • Contact from teachers, administration and counseling

Academics • ALL CLASSES MATTER- Don’t only focus on graduation requirements! • Students with Principal’s Waiver with failing grades may find themselves in jeopardy of losing the half day schedule • Senior year is meant to be enjoyed and fondly remembered, but not at the expense of grades! • Monitor progress using Synergy, interim reports, and teacher communications!

Important Dates • September 23- Senior Meeting (Activity Period) and Senior Information/Financial Aid Night • October 2- SCHS Open House • October 25- Senior Trip deposits and permission slips due $100 • October 31- First installment of Senior Dues $50 • November 5 – Senior Information Assembly Cap/Gown & Announcements

Important Dates • November 13 – Cap and Gown and Announcement orders in Cafeteria during all lunch shifts • November 25 - Second installment of Senior Dues $50 • December 13- Last day to submit senior picture for yearbook • December 20- Third installment of Senior Dues $50 • January 24- Last installment of Senior Dues $50

Important Dates • March (TBD)– Last day to purchase space in yearbook for senior recognition ads • April 9- Senior Trip final payment ($100) • April 18 – Prom – Martin’s Crosswind (Greenbelt, MD) 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. • April 24- Senior Trip- Carowinds Amusement Park Charlotte, NC • May (TBD) – Senior Parent Meeting • May 14 – Senior Clearance Forms Due • May 20-Senior Picnic

Important Dates k • May 20-27 – Graduation Rehearsal: MANDATORY (7:25-10:30 a.m.) • May 27 –Graduation Rehearsal: MANDATORY (7:25-10:30 a.m.) • Full Dress Required (Cap and Gown) • 7:30 AM Senior Panoramic Picture • Evening – Senior Awards Night - FULL DRESS/CAP AND GOWN ATTIRE **Seniors will NOT receive cap/gown or Graduation tickets if they owe debts to school.**

  10. Important Dates • May 30th – GRADUATION DAY! • 4:15 p.m. – Seniors assemble at St. Charles High School. All graduates must ride the bus to the Convocation Center at North Point High School and remain in the designated area throughout the ceremony. • 5:00 p.m. – Doors to the Convocation Center open to the public • 7:00 p.m. – Procession of graduates begins (doors closed to public during processional) • Tickets are required for entry to the ceremony • Time TBD: Project Graduation – College of Southern Maryland – Ticket Required **A more thorough meeting specific to graduation will be held in May. The date is to be determined.**

Senior Dues • Includes: • Cap and Gown with Class of 2020 Tassel • Personalized Yearbook (Reduced Price for Bulk Order) • Senior T-Shirt • Senior Picnic • Senior Awards Program • Commencement Ceremony • Doesn’t Include: • Homecoming Tickets • Prom Tickets • Senior Trip • Graduation Announcements, etc.

Senior Dues Cont. • Total Cost $200.00 Due by January 24, 2020 • 4 installments of $50 each: • Any student who has not paid dues in full by will not be able to purchase a ticket for the prom. • Dues can be paid by cash/money order or check payable to St. Charles High School • Dues may be submitted to the main office secretaries during LUNCH ONLY: Ms. Dyer, Ms. Monegain • For questions email 12th grade Vice Principal: Ms. Harvard-Lamb sharvardlamb@ccboe.com

Senior Trip April24, 2019 • $200 • Must secure at least 100 students with deposits submitted by October 25th • Destination: Carowinds Amusement and Water Park, Charlotte, North Carolina • 2 day park admission • Breakfast is provided on departure day and through hotel • Catered lunch during 1st day visit to park • Overnight accommodations included • A meeting will be held later in the year to review specific details related to the senior trip.

  14. Graduation Attire Ladies: • Dark (navy or black) colored dress, skirt, or pants, dark colored blouse, dark colored shoes (maximum heel of 2 inches) with a back strap, cap, gown, and stole. • No backless or strapless dresses. Spaghetti strap dresses must have a covering. No cork wedge heels. Heels maximum of 2 inches. Gentlemen: • Navy or black dress pants, white collared dress shirt, navy or black necktie, black dress shoes with dark socks. Ladies and Gentlemen: • No athletic, casual shoes, or sandals. No jewelry except for small stud earrings • Only stoles, pins and medals issued by St. Charles High School can be worn • Only attire that has received administrative approval can be worn under the gown.

  15. General Graduation Information Rehearsals: • May 20 – May 27 (7:25 AM – 10:30 AM) • All rehearsals are MANDATORY. Failure to attend will result in non-participation in the May 30th ceremonies. Students must reschedule job schedules, appointments, etc. from May 20 – May 27. • Absences will only be permitted with doctor or court verification • Dismissal time for all rehearsals will be determined daily based upon progress made during the practice. Students MUST leave the campus at the conclusion of daily graduation practice • Names on diplomas • The way the name appears on the student’s birth certificate is the way it will appear on the diploma (this is considered a legal document)

General Graduation Information Transportation • All graduates MUST ride the bus to the Convocation Center • Transportation AFTER graduation will not be provided (graduate must return home with his/her family). Project Graduation • Tickets are required and will be issued during graduation practice • Graduates may bring one guest. • This activity is sponsored by CSM, CCSO, and Charles County Public Schools at no cost to students.

Transcript requests • Fill out a transcript request form if you need atranscript to send to colleges. • There is a form for hardcopy and electronic requests. • Hardcopy requests, one form can be use for multiple schools. There is a $2 fee per transcript. • Completing the electronic form you were given in homeroom gives permission for all requests (SENDedu, COMMON APPLICATION, COALITION). • Scholarship and electronic requests are free of charge. • If you receive FARMS – transcript request is free • The request must be submitted a minimum of 5 school daysbefore it is needed (requests that require supplemental forms or a letter of recommendation may take up to 10 school days).

Transcripts • The transcript contains: • Final grades from 9th , 10th , 11th (when you send them now) • Unweighted and weighted grade point average (GPA) • Class rank • Classes you are currently taking **You will need this information when applying to college- keep the transcript you get today**

  23. Letters of Recommendation • Fill out a transcript request form and check off letter of recommendationfor each school to which you apply, if required. • The request must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the deadline.

  24. Testing • If you’re applying to a four year college or university, you need to take the ACT or SAT College Code for SCHS-- 211067 • www.collegeboard.org • actstudent.org

  25. DIPLOMAS • Diplomas are legal documents! • Your name on your diploma, must match the name on your birth certificate unless there is legal documentation of a name change on file.

What should they be doing now??? • 4-Year College • ACT and/or SAT Tests (ALL schools accept both test scores.) • College Applications – START APPLYING NOW!!! • Apply to at least 3 – 5 colleges (Reach, Target, Safety) • Be sure to include at least one Public Maryland School!!! • Go on each college’s website to find out the requirements of what needs to be submitted with the application – Letters of Recommendation, Transcripts, Essays???? • Pay attention to DEADLINES!!! • Visit College Campuses • Find the “Right Fit” • Attend Open Houses and/or Schedule College Visits • College Visit Absentee Guidelines CEEB / School Code for SCHS 211067

What should you be doing now??? • Community College / 2-Year College / Technical and Trade Schools • SAT / ACT are usually not required;however, students need to CHECK the college’s website to verify!!! • College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is our local community college. • You can earn an Associates Degrees, Certificates, Letters of Recognition • Transfer programs with 4-year schools – talk to the Transfer Specialist at CSM • CSM Placement Test will be offered in April/May at SCHS • Resources are available to help prepare for the placement test. • Two Community Colleges in Maryland that have dorms. • Allegany College of Maryland (Cumberland, MD) • Garrett College (McHenry, MD)

RESEARCH & APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS • Career Center link of the SCHS website • List of scholarships & lots of financial aid website links • Scholarship search engines such as FASTWEB • Many local organizations sponsor scholarships. Hard copies will be available in the Career Center if there isn’t a website to access it. • Look on your college’s website for additional scholarships. • Check with your parents’ work, religious organizations, or other groups you and/your family may be involved with. • Apply for ALL the SCHOLARSHIPS you can!!!

  32. Financial Aid NIGHT & the fafsa Financial Aid Night – TONIGHT, September 23, 2019 Immediately following Senior Info. Night A representative from a college Financial Assistance Department will provide information on: • FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid Available to complete starting October 1st! • FSA ID • Scholarships, Grants, Loans For more information, visit the Federal Student Aid website: www.studentaid.ed.gov or go on the Career Center tab of the SCHS website!

What should you be doing now??? • Military • ENLISTING AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? • Sign-up to take the ASVAB in the fall and spring (Dates TBD). • Must earn a certain score on the ASVAB in order to enlist….please STUDY!!! • Resources available in the Career Center, Media Center, eBooks, MCJROTC to help prepare for the ASVAB • Research all the branches and find out what benefits they each have. • MILITARY ACADEMY? • Go on to the academy websites to complete the application. • Need to get a nomination in order to be considered. (Senator or Congressman) • ROTC SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND COLLEGE? • Find out what each branch requires in order to apply for their scholarship. • Complete the scholarship application. • You do not need to be in JROTC in high school to apply for a ROTC Scholarship!!!

  34. What should you be doing now??? • Apprenticeships • Apprenticeships are jobs that combine paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction to teach the skill you need to have a career in a particular occupation. You “earn” while you “learn.” • An apprentice is “sponsored” by an employer or association. • These programs vary in length, pay, and intensity among the various trades. • Charles County Career Fair – March 21, 2020 *Representatives from several unions will be available. • Information is available in the Career Center and on the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program (MATP) website for students to research apprenticeship programs and opportunities. What should you be doing now??? • Workforce • Research job opportunities and find out how to apply for the position. • Some of the websites available to research jobs: www.dllr.state.md.us/county, www.indeed.com, www.glassdoor.com, https://mwejobs.Maryland.gov/vosnet/Default.aspx, www.onetonline.org • Federal jobs and Internships - www.usajobs.gov • Charles County Career Fair - March 21, 2020 • A RESUMÉ is a MUST!!! Be sure to include references. • Practice interviewing skills. • Research the company and understand what the company does BEFORE the interview. • Resources are available in the Career Center.

What’s in the career Center??? • RESOURCES to RESEARCH information on colleges, careers, apprenticeships, military, financial aid and scholarships. • Students can visit the Career Center in the morning, during the Activity Period, during lunch, during class with a pass from the teacher and after school with an appointment. • Seniors are encouraged to come to the Career Center to work on applications or get assistance with any questions they may have. • Resource Books • College Crates • Computers / Websites • Magazines, Pamphlets and Flyers • College and Military Representative Visits • Career Center Monthly Newsletter

Do you receive Mr. conley’s“Friday focus” email? • The Friday Focus provides important information and updates about what is going on at St. Charles High School. • It also includes a link to the Career Center News where parents can find out about College/Career Events taking place and additional information. • If you are not receiving the Friday Focus email, please contact your child’s counselor, grade level administrator, the main office, or Mr. Conley.

  40. Important Reminder!!! Please bring a copy of ALL College Acceptance Letters, Military Enlistments, and Scholarship Award Letters to Mrs. Malherek in the Career Center so the information can be put in the graduation program.

What is Financial Aid? • Financial aid consists of funds provided to students and families to help pay for postsecondary educational expenses. • Financial aid can be used at many different types of institutions, including: • Private colleges & universities • Public 2 & 4 year colleges & universities • Technical / vocational schools

  45. What is Cost of Attendance (COA)? The cost of attendance for an institution is made up of the following: • Direct Expenses – tuition & fees, room & board (if on campus) • Indirect Expenses – books & supplies, rent & food (if off campus or at home) • COA varies widely from college to college

  46. Cost of Attendance - Examples Notes: All tuition & fees based on in-state or in-county residency. Costs do not include personal expenses or transportation. * Assumes student is living at home with parent.

What is Expected Family Contribution (EFC)? • Amount family can reasonably be expected to contribute towards college expenses • Two components: • Parent Contribution • Student Contribution • Calculated using data from a federal application form (FAFSA) and a federal formula • Stays the same regardless of college
