Late 1800’s U.S. Immigration • The Story of Seeking the American Dream at the Dawn of the 20th Century: East and West
Laws • Pre-1864 • “the first immigration law in the United States” • The Immigration Act of 1891
Why The 1800’s • One of the Largest times of migration to the United states occurred in the years leading up to 1900 • Transportation via Boats became more affordable and lavish • From China Came workers for the west • From Europe Came Individuals Seeking Entrepreneurship
China • 1882 Brought the Chinese Exclusion Act • 1850’s Gold Rush • Building of the Western Railroads
China Issues • “China Man’s Chance” depicts atrocities • Track Laying World Record leads to lay-offs • Legal Harassment
Looking in:Norwegian Immigrants • Religious Solitude • Industrial Slowdowns • Immigration issues
Norwegian settlements • Assimilation slow but sure • Traditional employment • Towns of less than 25,000 people • Suburbanizing
A President’s Perspective • Immigrants poured in as before, but . . . now there come multitudes of men of lowest class from the south of Italy and men of the meanest sort out of Hungary and Poland, men out of the ranks where there was neither skill nor energy nor any initiative of quick intelligence; and they came in numbers which increased from year to year, as if the countries of the south of Europe were disburdening themselves of the more sordid and hapless elements of their population.
Adaptation • New culture does not mean lost heritage • “There was 55 years of life in the Soviet Union, and only 14 in the United States. An artist's work is based on much deeper influences and meanings than the change of physical space or, even, a country.”
A Harsh “New world” • Ellis Island • "In 1884 my husband brought his family to the German settlement near what is now Perry, Texas. We owned a little store and he was post--master at a little place called Stamps. It was at this place that we had our experience with robbers, one afternoon as we were ready to close the store, two men rode up on horse-back, came in and asked for tobacco. As my husband turned to get it, they drew a gun on him and told him to give them all the money he had. -Mrs. Lucinda Permien Holze • Racism: Not always Skin Deep • Border Disputes and Ocean away
