Pathways within the GS programme • 'Geology pathway' provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake a broad and balanced programme of study that provides general coverage of all of the key areas within the discipline.'Petroleum pathway' provides training in exploration geophysics, sedimentology, structural geology, and resource geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the hydrocarbons industry.'Minerals pathway' provides a background in ore geology, mineral exploration and structural geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the extractive (mineral exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry. ‘Environment pathway’ A route through the degree programme designed to prepare graduates for employment in the environmental science sector, where the practical application of geological principals is used to solve environmental problems. • Regardless of which pathway is followed, successful completion of the programme (which is accredited by the Geological Society) will lead to the degree qualification of BSc Geological Sciences. Nothing different on transcript but useful on CV, and for references.

11. After Leeds The SEG Chapter ‘Industrial advisor’ plays a key role in advising students on the current opportunities. Our graduates are working in: Australia: coal, diamond and iron ore mining, gold exploration Africa and Canada: gold exploration Contacts with industry are already strong and continually increasing. These will continue to enhance the employability of Leeds graduates. The bourgeoning activities of the SEG chapter will establish further contacts through fieldtrips, speakers and contacts made by alumni.

15. Why take the Petroleum Pathway? School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT • Hydrocarbon extraction will be an important part of the global economy for at least the next 50 years • Oil and gas is more environmentally friendly than coal which is the alternative bridging energy • Starting salaries in the UK are ~ £35k (with MSc) • Starting salaries in the USA are ~ $125k (with MSc)

21. Added value Teaching staff have strong links with employers in the Environmental sector, often exploited to support teaching via the Case Studies Module. LEGS: Leeds Environmental Geology Society We also use our links with industry to gain placements on our ‘Year in Industry’ degree option ( e.g, at White Young Green; Komex)

22. What if I don’t know whether I’m interested in this ? There are students societies (Roc-Soc. and Enviro-Soc.) who organise and host talks form guest speakers and key staff on research and industry related current topics in: Hydrogeology, Environmental Geochemistry and Engineering Geology. Key first year modules (some of which you may have taken as options) can give you a flavour for what the pathway offers: Intro to the Environment, Water Resources, Introductory Hydrogeology, Environmental Science Skills, Natural Hazards. 25. Pre-enrolment and registration Pre-Enrolment is “on-line” and starts on Monday Go to the ‘Student Services and Admin’ tab in the Portal

Flowchart for choosing options Pick first choice Complete pre-enrolment Check timetable If OK you can pre-register when the time comes If there is a clash select other option/s • Make sure that you are enrolled for a total of 120 credits of modules, at least 110 of which should be at Level 3. • It is your responsibility to ensure that module enrolment is correct, not the School’s. • The Semester split should 60/60 or 50/70 at most.

27. Exam information There are rules governing progression to Year 2: • You need to pass 100 credits to progress (honours). • Some Level 1 modules are labelled Pass For Progression (PFP). If you don’t pass either the 1st attempt or the resit, you cannot progress to Year 2 of the course. • GS PFP modules are the 80 credits of core modules:SOEE1150 (Fundamentals of Geophysics)SOEE1470 (Computing and Data Analysis)SOEE1490 (Understanding the Earth 1)SOEE1500 (Understanding the Earth 2)SOEE1510 (Practical Geology) • Students with Special Circumstances that have affected their studies must notify Katrina Firth in the School Office ASAP and not later than 13 June 2011. • An email will be sent to all students in the next few days confirming information relating to examinations, publishing of marks, and resit & progression procedures.

29. Year 2 field course dates and venues • GS SOEE2107 Connemara and County Clare • These are within the Easter Vacation: March 17 to April 16 • Dates TBA: DO NOT BOOK A HOLIDAY DURING THIS TIME • Dates will be confirmed as soon as possible, these two trips run consecutively and last 2 weeks.

30. Next academic year • School of Earth and Environment registration and compulsory start of year meetings will commence on Wednesday 21st September 2011. • You need to be in Leeds on this date NOT ON HOLIDAY!!

31. Feedback has been a major L&T theme for 2011, where we aimed to raise the profile of provision of feedback amongst staff and encourage students to engage with feedback accordingly.
