  1. Schemata HUM 3285: Postmodern Adolescent Literature Spring 2012 Dr. Perdigao March 23, 2012

  2. Aftershocks and aftermath • Bendis and friends—“It’s like in school. It’s just like school” (241). • “Bendis is on The List” (241) • Desire for violence, to others, to self (242) • Revenge on lacrosse team: “Behold the awesome power of The List!” (247). • Cal, changing perspective: victim vs. antagonist (249) • Solipsism • Bendis and friends like teachers—adults as petty (283) • “‘I’m taking Bendis off The List. I’ve never taken anyone off before. And I’m—’” (276).

  3. Desire? • Kyra/Dina conflation (260) • Dina on high school (266) • Fanboy/Donnie as chrysalis • THE ALICE? • Kyra’s voice, as muse (271) • Mab?

  4. Empowerment • Revenge on Frampton • “I’m Batman and Wolverine rolled into one” (289) after dealing with Sperling • Dealing with Kyra: “If I were Courteney, if I had Courteney’s powers, I would know everything. I’d be able to see Kyra’s thoughts and dreams and I’d know for sure. But I’m not Courteney, so I just have to go with my gut” (294). • Media center—like in violent fantasies • Now not “fanboy—superhero? • “What else can I do? I’m fifteen, for God’s sake. What else am I supposed to do?” (301).

  5. Metas • “This isn’t the time for it. This isn’t like a comic book crossover, Fanboy vs. Goth Girl. This is real life. This is . . . This is Schemata. This is defining and organizing experiences” (303). • Not a comic book but still a graphic novel, the concept • Like I Was a Teenage Fairy, Lyga’s novel bears the title based on the protagonist’s own idea • Schemata—as everything • “But this isn’t a movie or a book. And worst of all, I’m not a hero. . . I just want to touch her, to feel her, to know that she’s real, that I’m real. To find the exact, precise right things to say that will make it all stop and make it all go forward” (304).

  6. Goth Girl Rising Here? • “You want me to be normal? Is that what you want?” (305) • (Leo and Stargirl?) • “Everything’s broken, Kyra. Everything’” (306). • “‘You think Tinkerbell comes back? You think Jean Grey comes back as Phoenix? You think any of that stupid shit they’ve been cramming into your head since you could sit up straight is true? Do you?’ • “‘Welcome to the real world, fanboy’” (306). • From fantasy (comic book, graphic novels) to reality, reversal of magical realism in Block? • “You have to come back down and deal with it” (308), with drugs, life • New List— “for people like me. The people who need help” (309) • Mab?

  7. Schemata and (or as?) Adolescence “Everything seems like same old, same old, but there are new parameters now. They’re all caught up and I’m caught up, all of us connected, drawn together, connected, even though the connections are tenuous and almost invisible. They’re still there. They’re still there. I don’t get it. Not yet. But jeez, I’m a kid. Give me some time. What I do know for sure, though, is that everything that’s happened—for good and for bad—will inform Schemata. That’s what art is about, reflecting the world, reflecting experiences. I’ve been to a party. I’ve kissed a girl. I’ve been rejected. I’ve been kicked in the balls. There are new kinds of people for Courteney to meet. New fears to see. New dreams. I can’t wait to make them all come alive.” (310)
