7. MONOGRAPHS AND ARTICLES • Two preliminary comments: • Searching is no substitute for reading and “following the links”. This is true of commentaries, too. Those commentaries that don’t offer pericope-specific bibliographies will still refer to the literature! • All bibliographies, whether non-serial or serial, have their limitations. Though some are much more extensive than others, none is truly comprehensive. Hence no. 1 again, above. • Types of searches (use them all): • By passage (a special form of Subject Heading or Descriptor search, below) • By unofficial Keyword (including foreign-language equivalents, where appropriate) • By official Subject Heading or Descriptor

Serial bibliographies: ATLA Religion Database • Limitations of the ATLA Religion Database’s “Scriptures” button (or “SC Scripture Citation” field): • ATLA Religion Database coverage generally, which is not as extensive as that of (for example) Elenchus of Biblica. • Human judgment/error. • The “Scriptures” button itself: a “Scriptures” button search (which is based on the “SC Scripture Citation” field) . . . • is supposed to return works of modern scientific exegesis only. For this reason, it • complements (doesn’t necessarily eliminate the need for) an “SU Subject” field search (below). • dates from 1986 only, with some unpredictable retrospective coverage thrown in. Library catalogs In the Classic Catalog(far from comprehensive!): Pattern is Bible [Testament] Book Chapter (Roman) Verses (Arabic) This does not work well in the new SPU catalog (WorldCat Local). For this reason, I sometimes run a search like this in the Harvard Classic catalog, which is much more comprehensive than Summit and retains the Subject Browse feature of the old SPU Classic catalog, a feature that the new SPU catalog (WorldCat Local)lacks.

22. MONOGRAPHS AND ARTICLESSearching by Keyword and Subject Heading/Descriptor Do not rely solely on searches by passage. Use unofficial Keywords and official Subject Headings/Descriptors as well. Here are a pericope-specific monograph and a pericope-specific article. Neither were assigned passages: Keywords Official Subject Heading, but no passage (e.g. bible n t mark xii 1 12) Keywords Official Subject Heading, but no “SC Scripture Citation” field containing, e.g., Luke 20:9-19 (not even an “SU Subject” field containing, e.g., bible luke)
