  4. Worldly Church • Powerful • Tithes: Tax the Church required Christians to pay • Ecclesiastical: Church court system • Excommunication: banned from church and partaking of sacraments

  5. Crusades • 1095 AD: goal was to free the Holy Land • Changed way people lived: • Increased trade • Contact with the Muslim world • Marco Polo: “Prince of Liars”- told tales from overseas

  6. Holy Roman Empire • Otto the Great: gave land to the church to create the Holy Roman Empire • Henry IV has conflict with popes over power

  7. Investiture • 1075 Pope Gregory VIII • Concordat of Worms 1122 AD • Conflict: who would appoint bishops? • Treaty that ended the struggle between the emperors and popes over investiture

  8. Reconquista in Spain • Isabella Castile & Ferdinand of Aragon • Inquisition: • Help unify Spain • Drive the Muslims out of Spain & make everyone Catholic
