Teaching a School Like No Other • Berendale is a local school that caters for student with special needs. • Andrew Lamb from Berendale approached Black Rock Yacht Club to facilitate a sailing program for their students. • Andrew’s drive and enthusiasm to give the kids a chance to experience sailing was the stimulus for Black Rock to get involved.
Our Aim • To facilitate an inclusive sailing program for Berendale students. • Participation is not to be limited by disability, affordability, or any other restriction.
Key Features • Simple format with limited structure. • Emphasis on having fun. • Build confidence. • Engage students and encourage taking responsibility (i.e skipper rather than just sit there). • Foster participation, rather than achieving set measures of sailing competence.
Desired Outcomes • Ongoing retention in the sport. • Junior club membership at no cost to the student. • Opportunity to continue involvement in BRYC sailing programs. • BRYC to examine it’s weekend programs to ensure they meet the needs of all participants.
Why It Works? • Funding through sponsorship. • Volunteer instructors. • The team of instructors all have substantial sailing and mentoring/training experience. • Instructors actively engage and interact with the students. • The students have fun.
