About The TLT Collaborative • We are • A consortial organization created by the President of the University of North Carolina in 1999 as one part of a system-wide Information Technology Strategy initiative. • Vision • To serve as a catalyst for, and nurture excellence in, the productive application of technology for teaching and learning in the UNC system.

MERLOT: Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and On-Line Teaching A national initiative to create a repository of reviewed online learning objects (simulations, tutorials…) that can be incorporated into courses UNC is a founding institutionalpartner, one of 23 institutional participants that sponsor faculty reviewers OutreachFaculty and Staff Development www.merlot.org

OutreachFaculty and Staff Development • Conference evolution • May 2000 Retreat for campus TLT staff members • 80 participants • May 2001 Conference with 6 different tracks • 180 participants: campus TLT staff, faculty members, librarians, IT administrators and staff members, UNC system administrators • April 2002 Conference with several TLT themes, including faculty peer-to-peer sessions and workshops • 275 participants: as in 2001, with additional faculty members

OutreachFaculty and Staff Development • TLT Symposium • In partnership with North Carolina State University’s TLT Roundtable, this event in April 2001 brought four nationally recognized leaders in the TLT faculty support arena together with eighty UNC campus representatives. • Tom Lewis, University of Washington • John Moore, Virginia Tech University • Lawrence C. OutreachFaculty and Staff Development • TLT workshops • TLT Group Flashlight Program (January 2001) • Training workshop to introduce Flashlight (30 participants) • MERLOT (January 2002) • “Train the trainer” workshop on using MERLOT to help faculty integrate technology into teaching and learning (60 participants)

OutreachCampus Support • Grant programs • FY 1999-2000Competitive grant program awarded five grants totaling $141,000 to projects suggested by seven campuses. • FY 2000-2001$8,500 grants were awarded to each UNC campus ($136,000 total). • Project areas — chosen by the TLT Collaborative Board — focused on • Research into instructional uses of wireless technologies • Support for digital library services • Professional development on course management systems and other software

OutreachCampus Support • Flashlight Program / TLT Roundtables • Ten campuses have licensed Flashlight, which helps institutions study and improve their uses of educational technology. • Roundtable discussions help campuses develop TLT strategies, make decisions, and sustain change. • The TLT Collaborative purchased licenses and conducted training for campus representatives.

AboutThe TLT Collaborative • The immediate future (January–June 2002) • Strategic planning initiative • TLT Collaborative Board will engage in a strategic planning process to develop a plan by Summer 2002 to use in making decisions for FY 2002-03 and beyond. • Assessment initiative • Develop an online database of assessment resources including assessment tools. • Campuses can participate in discussion and support of individually-selected assessment projects.

AboutThe TLT Collaborative • Lessons learned so far • Collaboration in the TLT area among 16 very diverse sister institutions is indeed possible • One size does not fit all • Finding and establishing the self-identity of the Collaborative is important and difficult • Keep all participation voluntary
