  2. Supreme Court • 9 members- 8 justices & 1 chief Justice • Serve a life term-Only can be removed by death, resignation, or impeachment • Why? • Pres. Appoints- Senate approves by 2/3 vote • Only a few trials start in the Supreme Court-International officials and states • The Supreme Court only hears about a 100 cases a year

  4. Federal Courts • District Court- hear cases involving criminal law( murder, etc.) and civil law ( divorce, etc.) • Appellate/Circuit courts- hear appeals from lower courts • Supreme Court- final court of appeals, They can only be changed by another ruling by the Supreme Court

  5. JudicialReview • Set up by Marbury v. Madison, implied power • Supreme Court can decide if laws are unconstitutional • Examples-Brown v Board (Separate, but Equal), Gideon v Wainwright( Right to an attorney if you can’t afford one), Texas v. Johnson (flag burning)
