  6. Constructing Triangles and Quadrangles Join 3 straws of different lengths and lay your construction flat on your desk. What is this shape called? triangle Literally means “3” angles. How many tires does a tricycle have? TRI- always means 3.

  7. Constructing Triangles and Quadrangles Use any 4 straws and place your creation on your desk. What is a four-sided shape called? quadrangle or quadrilateral Literally means “4” angles or “4” sides. QUAD always means 4.

  8. Types of Quadrangles or Quadrilaterals • Make a quadrangle with all four sides equal length. • What is this shape called? Pull two opposite corners of the square in opposite directions. Are the angles still right? Are the pairs of opposite sides the same length? What is the new shape called? square NO YES rhombus

  9. More Quadrangles and Quadrilaterals Use two straws of one length and two straws of a different length. Make a quadrangle with pairs of opposite sides the same length and all right angles. What is this shape called? rectangle

  10. More Quadrangles and Quadrilaterals Pull two opposite corners of the rectangle in opposite directions. Are the angles still right? Are the pairs of opposite sides the same length? What is the new shape called? NO YES parallelogram

  11. TRAPEZOIDS Make a trapezoid. Are the angles right angles? Probably NOT, but TWO angles in a trapezoid may be right angles Are any of the sides the same length? Possibly, but all sides may have different lengths.
