Introduction • The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia's most well known and also is an iconic image of Sydney and Australia. • The bridge is locally nicknamed "The Coat Hanger" because of its arch-based design.
History • In 1912 Dr J.J.C Bradfield was appointed 'Chief Engineer of Sydney Harbour Bridge and his work on the project over many years earned him the legacy as the "father" of the bridge. • While the detailed design were undertaken by Mr (later Sir) Ralph Freeman of Sir Douglas Fox and his partners ,Mr. G.C Imbault. Some other designs that where not choosen can be found here. • In 1924 The Sydney Harbour Bridge started and took 1,400 men eight years to build at a cost of £4.2 million.
Opening and Operations • The bridge was formally opened on Saturday 19 March 1932. • The Sydney Harbour Bridge links Sydney's two major commercial centres and forms a daily orientation point for millions.
New Year's Eve • The Harbour Bridge is an integral part of Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations, generally being used in spectacular ways during the fireworks displays.
