Defense Mechanisms. Unconscious actions that we use to protect ourselves emotionally. Compensation- Make up for a weakness by using strength in another area. Conversion- Replacing unpleasant emotional reactions by physical reactions.

  1. Defense Mechanisms Unconscious actions that we use to protect ourselves emotionally.

  2. Compensation- Make up for a weakness by using strength in another area. Conversion- Replacing unpleasant emotional reactions by physical reactions.

  3. Daydreaming- Fantasizing to escape unpleasant reality or boring situation. Denial- Refusing to recognize an emotion or a problem (repression).

  4. Displacement- Transferring emotions from the original source to another, taking something out on someone else. Identification- Assuming the qualities of someone you admire, imitate.

  5. Projection- Putting your own faults onto someone else, shifting blame. Rationalization- Making excuses for actions or feelings that are not the real reasons.

  6. Reaction formation- Behaving in a manner opposite to the way you are feeling. Regression- Reverting to immature behavior to express emotions, childlike behaviors.

  7. Sublimation- Directing your energy into a useful rather than an unacceptable goal, unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable goals. Substitution- Replacing one goal with a goal that is really attainable.
