??? From Here to There
So What’s the Story Behind the Story? • If we talk about what we did ALONE you will be informed but probably not able to replicate • Some KEY drivers/beliefs in our implementation: • It’s about the learning!! • Instructional IT • Devices/control in the hands of the learner • Re-alignment of the organization to learning rather than compliance • Urgency
Some Key Ideas?…before we start How Can’t This is about the learningNOT the device or tech
NEW Thinking About old problems Bottom-line Different Assumptions Assumptions Most of us have to rethink our organizationalstructure …do we encourage: Compliance? Innovation? …can I get in trouble for noncompliance? System
KEY Concepts • Technology in the hands of the STUDENT …not the adults • Desktop vs. Mobile • Student “owns” the device until the end of the school year • Don’t underestimate the power of BYOD/BYON • Broadband options • Digital citizenship • Caching Server: • Hardware • Software • Multiple Options: • SmartRiverside • Starbucks, McDonalds, Public Library, etc.
Implementation Strategies Rethinking Our Assumptions • Just DO it!! • Pilot …then scale • Motivate rather than require • Can’t vs. HOW • It’s not really a problem • IT support? • PD support? • Transparency
Student Voice • ICF Shortened Video
Open Access VS Lock & Block • Lock & Block applies across the board in education. Access to learning, content and technology is tightly controlled and managed by the “System” • Open Access focuses on the “Learner” and access to a variety of learning opportunities, content and technologies.
Open Access to Technology • Device “Agnostic” • Allow students to bring their own technology into our system (BYOT) (BYON) • Provide unrestricted district owned technology and access to students without technology or access • Provide Access to 3rd party insurance to cover loss, theft or damage • Students provide tech support, etc • Library Media Centers and systems used to deliver and track devices
Open Access to Content • cK12: (http://www.ck12.org/flexbook/) • iTunes U: (http://www.apple.com/education/itunesu/whats-on.html) • Curriki: (http://www.curriki.org/) • Khan Academy: (More than just Algebra) (http://www.khanacademy.org/) • District, Teacher or Student created content: (http://www.rusdlearns.net)
Ubiquitous learning >>>value-addedpropositions >>>different kindsof schools(jobs) Student-centricsystem >>> greater choiceand flexibility >>> modularity (personalization) Focus on competency As students master skills >>>they move on What does that mean?
+19% HMH Fuse Pilot Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Provides iPads and Algebra I Application and 2010 Algebra Textbooks • Two teachers selected randomly who teach multiple sections of Algebra I • One section from each teacher is provided with iPads that are checked out to students vs. remaining sections with traditional textbook • Independent Evaluation: All classes are taught with the same resources -- the results to be studied to identify differences between classes with or without iPads (digital text)
Technology Implementation • Why was the Algebra project so successful? • Technology? …probably not • Students “owned” their device • They had their personal music / video / etc. on it • They tended to take it with them everywhere • Students had access 24/7 • Integrated video allowed the instruction to go with the student • Students “read” the chapter as many times as they needed • Nota perfect solution …but certainly an improvedsolution
What is Blended Learning? A formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of contentandinstructionwith some element of student controlover time, place, path, and/or pace… AND …at least in part at asupervisedbrick-and-mortar location away from home.
Flipped Classroom • Flip Class at Sierra MS
Riverside Virtual School • Opened in 2006 with supplemental courses • Fulltime program started in 2007 • WASC accredited, NCAA and UC approved • Online and blended-learning courses • Anytime access to content, collaboration tools and instruction
California Open Campus • Consortium of school districts across CA • Expanding access to online/blended learning (coursesANDcontent) • Each district collects its own ADA • Share costs on a “pass through” basis • We (YOU) can start now!
Overall results from the view of the Superintendent • Extended learning time • …more time at task • Greater engagement of the students • Engagement = learning • Choice // personalization • Improved performance
