  1. Results of Nitrogen Trials in Adapt Network Maumee Project 2012 Summaries of Data from 2008-2011 Tom MorrisProfessor, Soil Fertility Specialist University of Connecticut thomas.morris@uconn.edu March 13, 2013

  2. Two goals we agree on Everyone wants clean water for drinking, recreation, and fish/seafood production Everyone wants food production

  3. Rainfall – 2012 Joe Deviation Greg Deviation March 3.08 +0.48 2.28 -0.32 April 1.29 2.23 1.61 -1.91 May 1.06 -3.21 0.53 -3.74 June 0.65 -3.51 2.28 -1.88 July 4.35 +0.11 1.66 -2.58 Aug 3.51 -0.13 3.18 -0.46 Sept 3.61 +0.81 0.51 -2.29 Total 17.37 -7.86 12.05 -13.18

  4. Corn stalk nitrate results - 2012 64 GSS fields in Maumee Adapt Network Corn Stalk Nitrate (ppm) Optimum range

  5. Corn stalk nitrate values for 39 fields manure or no manure in Maumee in 2012 Percent of total fields in the category 5

  6. Corn stalk nitrate values for 39 fields previous crops in Maumee in 2012 Percent of total fields in the category 31 6 2

  7. Corn stalk nitrate values for 37 fields till or no-till in Maumee in 2012 Percent of total fields in the category 10 27

  8. Corn stalk nitrate results - 2008 to 2012 347 GSS fields in Maumee Adapt Network Corn Stalk Nitrate (ppm) Optimum range

  9. Dry? Wet Drought Stalk NO3 Results Low (<250 ppm) Marginal (250-700 ppm) Optimum (700-2000 ppm) High (>2000 ppm)

  10. Strip Trials in Maumee Adapt Network in 2012 45 strip trials 1/3 of the trials yielded less than 100 bu/acre or were not harvested Average yield across all plots was 129.2 bu/acre Yields ranged from 97 bu/acre to 164 bu/acre (one irrigated field yielded 217 bu/acre)

  11. Strip Trials in Maumee Adapt Network in 2012 4 treatments: 100, 150, 200 and 250 lbs N/acre Three replications at each field Most N sidedressed as UAN

  12. Strip Trials

  13. Strip Trials Optimum range

  14. Corn stalk nitrate for 38 strip trials in Maumee Adapt Network in 2012 Percent

  15. Average Yield at 38 Strip Trials in Maumee in 2012 Average Yield (bu acre-1) Increase = 9 bu/acre N Rate (lbs/acre)

  16. Average Corn Stalk Values at 38 Strip Trials in Maumee in 2012 Average Corn Stalk Nitrate (ppm) N Rate (lbs/acre)

  17. Yield for 62 N strip trial sites Maumee Adapt Network - 2008-2010 Bu/acre 169 160 170 146 110

  18. Stalk nitrate for 62 N strip trial sites Maumee Adapt Network - 2008-2010

  19. Yield for 21 N strip trial sites Maumee Adapt Network -2011

  20. Stalk values for 21 N strip trial sites Maumee Adapt Network -2011

  21. ST12OHMM022 92 bu/acre

  22. Average Yield = 92 bu/acre Red = 100 lbs; Yellow = 150 lbs; Blue = 200 lbs; White = 250 lbs

  23. ST12OHMM026 - 156 bu/acre

  24. Average Yield = 156 bu/acre Red = 100 lbs; Yellow = 150 lbs; Blue = 200 lbs; White = 250 lbs

  25. Conclusions On average 150 lbs N/acre provides economical yield Averages are dangerous – You need to look at the stalk values and yields from strip trials from your fields to make the best decision about nitrogen for your fields Keep field-by-field records Think in terms of being a better manager of nitrogen over the next 10 years
