  5. You are of “Two” Minds… The Conscious Mind The Subconscious Mind

  6. Conscious Mind • Voice in your head – “Self-Talk.” • Rational and Analytical • Visionary – Can imagine a future

  7. Subconscious Mind • Center of Emotions and Instincts • Storehouse of memories – DNA, Habits • Cannot tell the difference between a real or an imagined experience

Elephant – Weaknesses(Subconscious) • Wants what it wants ‘now’ and does not like to make a short-term sacrifice for long-term payoff. • Is fearful of change, skittish, likes the status quo and has a default setting of “survival.” • Does not “reflect” in the traditional sense but thinks in absolutes: “right and wrong”- “like or dislike” - “love or fear

  16. Elephant – Strengths(Subconscious) • Is the power and the energy – the heavy lifter. • Is the center of our emotions and the storehouse of our memories. • Cannot tell the difference between a real experience or one which is imagined by the Rider. (But, maybe not always.)

  17. The Rider – Weaknesses(Conscious) • Is at the whim of the Elephant and can serve only as a kind of “advisor.” • Has a natural tendency to see mostly the negative and over-analyze (analysis paralysis). • Has limited reserves of mental energy. Will-power and decision-making can sap its resources.

  18. Rider – Strengths(Conscious) • Can look into the future and visualize alternate paths of choice and – make a plan. • Is a master storyteller The Rider loves to make up and tell stories, even if many of the stories are a complete confabulation and often a rationalization. • Can influence but not control the Elephant with vivid, emotionally charged pictures and images.
