  1. Building your Virtual Environment with Hyper-V & System Center Matthew Organ Business Development Manager Microsoft Server & Toolsmatthew.organ@ingrammicro.ca

  2. Agenda • Windows Server Licensing Basics • Types of Licenses • OS License Mobility vs. VM License Mobility • Licensing impacts HA, Load Balancing, vMotion/Live Migration • Upselling Enterprise Edition And Datacenter • Why Hyper-V? • Why consider System Center? • System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 • System Center Essentials 2010 • System Center Suites – Ent & Datacenter

  3. Why is the licensing conversation so important? Microsoft Account Teams report nearly universal mislicensing in virtualized environments • “Mislicensing exists at the operating system level (more virtual machines than licenses) and hardware level (not all processors are licensed), and virtual machine mobility restrictions are violated.” • “If I had to guess, out of approximately 50 accounts I had last year, 80% or more are not licensed properly.” • “In 100% of the cases where the customer has virtualized they are not properly licensed.”

  4. Licensing Basics: Types of Licenses Windows Server License – Virtual Machine • 1 VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 = 1 License • CALs are required to access instances of Windows Server 2008 R2 running on VMs • Customers should check application software licensing for instances running on VMs

  5. Licensing Basics: Understanding Mobility Virtual Machines (VM) / Virtual Operating System Environments (VOSE) • VOSE or VMscan be moved at will • If Server A becomes overloaded, the VM that is running the software instancecan be moved to Server B • When moving an instance, customers must be sure that the destination location has an appropriate license to accept the VM A B • There are no licensing constraints regarding how frequently VMs can be moved. VMs can also be moved across servers with VL licenses and OEM licenses

  6. OEM / ROK vs. Open

  7. Satisfy the need to consolidate and improve application availability Scenario 1: Customer wants to consolidate 8 existing Volume License based Windows Servers onto 2 new virtual hosts. They would like the capability to dynamically move VM’s across hosts during maintenance periods. Which options do they have? Option 1 - Hyper V Server 2008R2 - includes HA and Live Migration capabilities. Download for free at http://www.microsoft.com/hyper-v-server/en/us/default.aspx

  8. Satisfy the demand for increased availability Scenario 2: Customer wants to Live Migrate all 4 VM’s from Server A to Server B in order maintain availability of apps during a brief period of maintenance. How can they do this and maintain license compliance? Option 1 – Reassign all 4 operating system licenses to Server B.* Is this a viable option for this customer? (90 day minimum) *Volume License scenario

  9. Satisfy the demand for increased availability Scenario 2: Customer wants to Live Migrate/vMotion all 4 VM’s from Server A to Server B in order maintain availability of apps during a brief period of maintenance. How can they do this and maintain license compliance? +4 Existing Windows licenses from initial consolidation Option 2 – Purchase additional Windows licenses to ensure the destination server is licensed for “Peak Capacity”

  10. Ensure license compliance by licensing for “Peak Capacity” Scenario 2: Customer wants to consolidate 8 existing Volume License based Windows Servers onto 2 new virtual hosts. They would like the capability to dynamically move VM’s across hosts during maintenance periods. +4 +4 Existing Windows licenses from initial consolidation Existing Windows licenses from initial consolidation Option 3 – To ensure that both hosts are licensed to support Live Migration/vMotion, both Server A and Server B will need additional licenses.

  11. Licensing Windows Servers for “Peak Capacity” Golden Rule: License servers for peak capacity • While VMotion and Hyper V Quick/Live Migration move instances of virtual OSEs between physical servers, the licenses remain with the physical server to which they were assigned. • When an instance is moved to a new physical server, that new server must already have appropriate licenses assigned to it. • Recommending Windows Server Datacenter will ensure customers are licensed for “Peak Capacity” (unlimited virtual instances of Windows Server per device) • Datacenter offers the greatest flexibility to move instances between servers without having to track the number of instances running or worry about being under licensed

  12. Upselling additional capacity and compliance • “If you are thinking of adding more than 2 new virtual workloads over the life of this server you should be buying Enterprise Edition.” • Windows Server Ent. Ed. comes with 4 virtual Windows licenses • “If you are thinking of running more than 4 new virtual workloads “per processor” you should be buying Datacenter.” • Windows Server Datacenter comes with unlimited virtual Windows licenses “per processor” • “Will you need any additional Windows licenses to support Live Migration, vMotion, HA, and/or Fault Tolerance? (license for Peak Capacity) • Lead with a compliance message (not a compete message) to VMWare customers. Lead with upsell messaging to potential Microsoft customers. (balance compliance vs. deployment)

  13. Packaging Hyper-V and System Center

  14. Why Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V? Included in Enterprise & Datacenter Editions • Better flexibility • Live Migration • Dynamic Memory • Remote FX • Cluster Shared Volumes • Hot Add/remove of Storage • Processor compatibility mode for live migration • Improved performance • Improved memory management • Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) Support • Improved Networking Hyper-V is included as a feature of Windows Server 2008 R2. If you own it, why not deploy it?

  15. Why is management so important? • The right tools can help ease the management and deployment of new or existing virtual machines • Provide you with “best practice” guidance on how to setup, provision, and intelligently place virtual machines • Virtualization adds a layer of complexity to your environment that did not previously exist • With multiple workloads running on each host automated tools are required in order to efficiently remediate issues and simplify maintenance www.microsoft.com/virtualization
