  1. Christianity and transplant Surgery.

  2. Take the following question down: • Do you think Christians should agree with transplant surgery? Give two reasons for your answer • i/ what gcse type question is it • ii) how many marks is it worth? • Iii) tell your neighbour how you will answer it

  3. Homework: • “All religious people should carry a donor’s card” do you agree • i) give 3 reasons for your opinion • ii) give 3 reasons why some people might disagree • In your answer you should refer to at least one religion.

  4. All will understand why Christians have different views on the topic of heart transplant. • Most will intelligently compare the Christian and their own religious views on the topic. • Skills: reflective participators

  5. Recap of last lesson and scientific views • How Jesus breaks the law : video • The Christian interpretation of Jesus acts and how it applies tot heart transplant • Sticking our own religious view in the book answering GCSE questions

  6. So what is the science behind transplant surgery • The types ? • Why is it important? • Today’s keywords: • Organ donation, resurrection

  7. This is a video of Jesus breaking the law to make sure someone is healed by God? • How do you think this will apply to heart transplant if you were Jesus disciple?

  8. Most Christians will agree with transplant surgery but would object to rich people or surgeons in the developed world paying for organs from the poor. • What could be their reasons? (some reasons are religious some are not)

  9. These are 5 reasons. Which one do you think is the most important? Discard the least important and copy the 4 most important in your book • 1- Christians who believe in the immortality of the soul believe that the body is not needed after death and therefore its organs can be used to help the living. • 2- Christians who believe in the resurrection believe St Paul’s words that the body will be transformed and that resurrection will not need the physical organs.

  10. 3-Jesus told Christians that they should love their neighbours and leaving your organs to save lives after your death is a way of loving your neighbour • 4-Jesus also told Christians to treat others as they would wish to be treated by them. And most Christians would want a transplant if they needed it. • 5-Christians object to paying for organs because it is likely to lead to exploiting the poor (fathers selling their kidneys to feed families). The Bible is full of statements about exploiting the poor.

  11. Some Christians will not agree with transplant at all and will not carry a donor card so they will refuse any organ donation. • They believe that transplants could disregard the sanctity of life. Will surgeons who have a patient desperate for a transplant work to the best of their ability to save the life of a potential donor?

  12. They believe that transplanting organs is usurping God’s role and it is wrong to ‘play God’ • It raises the problem of when someone is dead, as such things as heart transplants require the heart to be removed before it has stopped beating. • It raises the moral/emotional problem: does a surgeon save life of an unknown accident victim or the patient they know who needs a transplant? • It diverts resources from prevention or less expensive cures which could improve the lives of far more people than a single transplant

  13. Some Christians are opposed to transplant surgery using organs from dead people, but accept transplants using organs donated by living relatives. They would not allow such organs to be paid for. This attitude is based on: • The Christian belief that organs such as the heart are an intrinsic part of the individual who has been created by God • Transplanting organs from the dead into the living is usurping the role of God, and humans do not have the right to act of God

  14. Stick your own religious view in your book • And answer the following question in silence before swoping books and help each other • Choose one religion other than Christianity and explain why some of its followers agree with transplant surgery and some do not.

  15. Review: after reading the book of your neighbour • What are the major differences between Christianity and other religions on heart transplant?
