  1. Are you thinking about painting your cabinets

  2. Are you considering remodeling your kitchen or bathroom? Deciding what to do with your cabinets is a major consideration. According to HGTV, new cabinets are likely to take up to 50% of your remodeling budget, depending on what you decide to do. There are a lot of choices here. You could replace, re-face, refinish, or repaint your cabinets. But why choose one option, over the other? In our opinion, the best option is to repaint. It is the most cost effective option and, compared to replacement, by a lot. In addition to the cost of replacement, you will have to pull any appliances that are built-in in order to replace the cabinets. Built-in appliances might include your dishwasher, oven, stove, microwave, etc., and are structurally tied into the cabinets. If you repaint, this won’t be necessary and your kitchen can still be used, throughout the course of the remodel. In the event you decide to repaint, there are five steps to consider. You will need to dismantle doors, drawers and hardware; carefully prep the wood (an often mismanaged task); prime; paint and reassemble. Care should also be taken when selecting the right primer and paint. Additionally, if the remodel includes a change of hardware, be sure to consider where the existing drill holes are, if possible. Patching and re-drilling will add an unwelcome degree of complexity to the task. The problem with this is that it can be a fairly daunting task to try to undertake in your spare time (if you have any), as a DIY project, and can be very disruptive, for an extended period of time. These types of projects can put a real stress on family relationships.
