INTRODUCTION Unfortunately, they don’t tell us much about the new physics behind LFV NEUTRINO OSCILLATIONS LEPTON FLAVOUR VIOLATION Within the SM + neutrino masses: Present limits and future sensitivities of several LFV processes. Cheng, and Li 1977; Petcov, 1977; Marciano and Sanda ,1977; Shrock and Lee, 1977. THE OBSERVATION OF THESE PROCESSES WOULD PROVIDE A NOVEL AND STRIKING EVIDENCE OF NEW PHYSICS !!! HINT ON THE NEUTRINO MASS GENERATION MECHANISM ? LEPTON FLAVOUR VIOLATION From the present bounds on LFV processes: Many scenarios with new sources of LFV, e.g. SUSY: Potential new LFV effects in the SUSY breaking sector… NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 2 Filipe Joaquim – ,
LFV IN THE SUSY TYPE I SEESAW P.Minkowski, 1977; T.Yanagida; M.Gell-Mann, P.Ramond, R.Slansky, 1979; S.Glashow; R.N.Mohapatra, G.Senjanovic, 1980 N-induced Seesaw (Type I) 18 parameters in total After electroweak symmetry breaking: Gonzalez-Garcia,Maltoni 07 Gonzalez-Garcia,Maltoni 07 Gonzalez-Garcia,Maltoni 07 3 mixing angles 2 Majorana Phases 1 Dirac phase 3 Neutrino masses + 9 Low-energy parameters Hardly difficult (or impossible) to extract (in a model independent way) the high-energy flavour structure from low-energy measurements. LFV IN THE SUSY TYPE I SEESAW THE SEESAW INTERACTIONS MAY INDUCE LFV IN THE SSB TERMS. Borzumati, Masiero ’86 Universal boundary conditions at Λabovetheseesawscale: Hisano et. al., ’95 Casas and Ibarra, ’01 Lavignac, Masina, Savoy,’01 Masiero, Vempati, Vives, ’02 Depisch et. al.’02 Petcov et. al,’03 Arganda, Herrero,’05 and many more... RGE No model independent predictions…. LFV incoded in: FRJ, Masina, Riotto ’07 FRJ, Masina, Riotto ’07 FRJ, Masina, Riotto ’07 NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 4 Filipe Joaquim – ,
LFV IN THE SUSY TYPE II SEESAW M.Magg, C.Wetterich, 1980; Barbieri et all, ‘80; Schechter and Valle, ‘80; R.Mohapatra, G.Senjanovic, 1981; E.Ma, U.Sarkar, 1998. T-induced Seesaw (Type II) One pair is enough to give mass to three neutrinos… 11 parameters in total, but… one LFV source: After electroweak symmetry breaking: RGE Anna Rossi ‘02 The big difference is that: In both cases LFV is generated à posteriori due to RGE effects… No direct participation of the neutrino mass “mediators” in the process of SUSY breaking FRJ and Anna Rossi, PRL’06; NPB’07 NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 5 Filipe Joaquim – ,
MODEL INDEPENDENT PREDICTIONS FOR LFV PROCESSES In terms of the PMNS mixing matrix and neutrino masses: • Normal ordering: • Invertedordering: NO DEPENDENCE ON MAJORANA PHASES AND LIGHTEST NEUTRINO MASS ! NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 6 Filipe Joaquim – ,
RATIOS OF BRANCHING RATIOS Dominant contributions: The ratios of the BR’s can be written in terms of the low-energy neutrino parameters In the present case of dominant LL slepton mixing (which is our case): NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 7 Filipe Joaquim – ,

LARGE tan EFFECTS Analytical results obtained using: The ratios of the BR’s deviate from the analytical results for large tanβ For large tanβsplitting of slepton masses and running of neutrino parameters NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 10 Filipe Joaquim – ,
LARGE tan EFFECTS • Splitting of slepton masses for large tan Running effects Effective neutrino mass operator Y T Running of Soft masses at m Z Using low-energy neutrino parameters NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 11 Filipe Joaquim – ,
LFV AND SEARCHES FOR θ 13 WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR THE NEAR FUTURE ? Fogli et all. hint If S13 > 0.05, then we (probably) wouldn’t see anything else besides µ eγ… NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 12 Filipe Joaquim – ,
CONCLUSIONS • Type II seesaw more predictivethanType I – Directconnectionwithlow-energy • neutrino massesandmixings • Predictions do notdependon Majorana phases, neutrinomassscaleandweak • dependenceon type of neutrino mass spectrum (NH or IH) – (atleast for small tanβ) • CP-violatingeffects are in general smallexcept for S13 ~ 0.01 where “flavoursuppressions” • mayoccur • For largetanexactresultsdeviatefromanalyticalestimatesdue to RGE effects • (sleptonmasssplitting, runningof neutrino parameters). • Typicalprediction for largeS13 : onlyµ eγ NOW 2008 – ConcaSpecchiulla 13 Filipe Joaquim – ,
