Don’t Make Me Think By: Steve Krug The Five Guiding Principles Presentation By: Carissa McKenna
Don’t Make Me Think • This is the most important of the guiding principles • Be self-evident, obvious and self-explanatory • Make the web-page as easy to navigate as problem • There should be no questions as to where to click, everything should be clear and consist
How We Really Use the Web • Viewers tend to scan pages, simply clicking on what is most appealing • They don’t even notice large parts of the web page • People only skim because they are usually in a hurry, don’t feel the need to read everything, or are so used to skimming pages • The simpler and more visually appealing the web page, the better it will be.
Billboard Design 101 • Clear visual hierarchy, the more important the bolder and bigger it should be • Take advantage of conventions, summarizing helps readers focus on items • Break pages into clearly defined areas, making it easier to navigate • Make obvious what is clickable, pointing out where to click • Minimize noise, get rid of background noise and the busyness on the page
Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral? • Title is based off of the game twenty questions • It doesn’t matter how many times you have to click, as long as it it mindless • Making the choice mindless makes the site easier to use
Omit Needless Words • Removing half of the words that are taking up space should be a goal • Getting rid of needless words will reduce the noise level of the page, makes useful content more prominent, and makes the pages shorter • Removing words in the introduction and instructions will benefit your page the most
