  1. Networking in the Classroom Miss McGriff Orientation to Teaching I Unit 2, Characteristics of Learners

  2. Objective • In this lesson, you will: • Learn about networks and why they are important for schools to consider • Join a class “network” to communicate online with me and your classmates • Explore real-world issues related to child development by researching online

  3. Let’s learn about networks… • http://fcit.usf.edu/network/chap1/chap1.htm • http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/network.html • http://www.netc.org/network_guide/1.html • http://www.techsoup.org/support/articles-and-how-tos/networking-101-understanding-networking-needs-and-options

  4. We’re going to create our own classroom “network” with Edmodo.com

  5. Edmodo.com helps teachers and students do the following:

  6. Instructions • Create a free student account by following the prompts on the home page

  7. You will be prompted to create a profile and insert a picture, etc. Once you create your profile, this is what your home screen will look like:

  8. This networking site will allow: • you to submit assignments digitally instead of on paper. • me to grade your assignments digitally and send you feedback instantly • your parents to access your grades or progress and communicate with me regularly • you and your classmates to collaborate digitally

  9. This “networking” assignment meets ISTE Standard 1. This is important because the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) keep teachers and students up to date in an “increasingly connected global and digital society” (ISTE.org).

  10. Once you have created your profile and explored Edmodo.com… • Research for child development stories in the recent news (2010-present) about children in middle childhood (age 6-10). Find 1 story that pertains to what we have talked about in class regarding this stage of development. • You should: summarize the 3 news stories, determine what type of development is represented, and discuss why it is important for teachers or parents to know. Please type your descriptions in a Word document (1 page minimum) and include the url of your article. • Submit your assignment through the assignment link titled “Child Development in the News” in Edmodo.
