  3. Objectives • Understand the versatile business aims of concept design. • Learn user centered concept design process. • Learn concepts related to UX (and emotional) design. • Understand the designers’ responsibilities in UCD. • Learn to gather and apply, user and context information • Learn to interpret qualitative user data • Learn to generate, present and evaluate concept designs. • Get practice with academic writing in design research. • Practice cross-disciplinary and cross-culturalcollaboration. UID10 | Keinonen

  4. High national priority • “The national innovation strategy of Finland was prepared with the aim of finding new sources of competitive advantages for Finland in response to the ever-increasing global competition. Demand and user-driven innovation policy was identified as a key policy area to be developed. …. Design has a more prominent role in user-driven innovation than before, and it can be applied in a comprehensive way to developing services and products alike. Design tools are also applicable to developing solutions to social challenges.” • Demand and User-driven Innovation Policy – Framework (Part I) and Action Plan (Part II). MEE Publications 48/2010 UID10 | Keinonen

  5. Recent doubts • Although we would prefer to believe conceptual break- troughs occur because of a detailed consideration of human needs, especially fundamental but unspoken hidden needs so beloved by the design research community, the fact is it simply doesn’t happen. New conceptual breakthroughs are invariably driven by the development of new technologies. Norman D A (2010). Technology First, Needs Last: The Research-Product Gulf. Interactions March + April 2010, pp 38-42 • The research demonstrates that radical innovation of product meanings – which leads to products with long lives, significant, sustainable profit margins, brand value, and company growth – hardly starts from a close observation of user needs and requirements. “User-centered” innovation indeed does not question existing meanings but rather further reinforces them. Instead, rather than getting close to users, breakthrough firms follow a different strategy: design driven innovation. http://www.verganti.it/research.html (visited 11.10.2010) Verganti R (2009) “Design-Driven Innovation”, Harvard Business Press UID10 | Keinonen

  10. goal • Design a concept, i.e. • identify an opportunity for a product (or service) that enhances human wellbeing (without compromising…) • Needs to be justified, novel and ethical • Created through a process that builds on team’s inspiration, stakeholders involvement, relevant and valid information, and on true interest on change for the better • Document and reflect on the process UID10 | Keinonen
