Third person • We have seen this type of verb throughout the first 3 stages: • Servus in hortōlaborat. • The slave works in the garden. • Caeciliuspecuniam tenet. • Caecilius holds money. • Canis in viādormit. • The dog sleeps in the street. • What do these verbs have in common? • Laborat, Tenet, Dormit
Third person, cont. • This is the “he/she/it” form of the verb. • In these sentences, we are not talking about ME, or YOU, but SOMEBODY ELSE. • Metellaest mater. • Metella is the mother. • Caeciliuspecuniamnumerat. • Caecilius counts money. • Amicus versumrecitat. • The friend recites the verse.
First person • Now we will learn how to describe action from other POINTS OF VIEW. • When we talk about ourselves, we are using the FIRST PERSON. • Ego cenamcoquo. • I cook dinner. • Ego pecuniamteneo. • I hold money. • Ego amicumlaudo. • I praise the friend.
First person • So what do these verbs have in common: • Coquo, teneo, laudo. • So we see that in Latin you can tell whether I do the action or HE does the action based on the verb’s ENDING: • Coquo = I cook • Coquit= he cooks • O = I • T = he
Second person • What about if we want to say “you” do the action? • Tucenamcoquis. • You cook dinner. • Tupecuniamtenēs. • You hold money. • Tuamicumlaudās. • You praise the friend. • What do these verbs have in common? • Coquis, tenēs, laudās.
conjugation • Putting the correct ending on a verb to make it express “I”, “you” or “he” does the action is called conjugating it. • But what is different about laudat, tenet, and coquit? • The –a, -e, -i. • Verbs that have the –a vowel are FIRST conjugations. • All verbs whose second principal part ends in –are are1stconjugation verbs. • Laudo, laudare, laudavi, laudatus • Laudo, laudas, laudat • Verbs that have the –e vowel are SECOND conjugations. • All verbs whose second principal part ends in –ēreare 2ndconjugation verbs • Teneo, tenēre, tenui, tentus • Teneo, tenes, tenet
