  1. Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  2. The writing used to represent the tense of time within our production was aimed to be mimic to the credit font used in David Fincher’s ‘Se7en’. This film has been highly credited for it’s dark, twisted storyline and aspects contributing to this, we felt this would best represent our production. The camera positioning within this shot in a high shot, representing the superiority of the audience. This already prioritises the audience, making them feel important. Also, the dark, shadowy aspects of this shot represents the strange, gloomy characters and storyline within our production. The silence of this shot, with only the sound of a lighter turning on and off. This aims to unnerve the audience, setting them up for the future events. Also, The font represents the past, being sketchy and un-modern, also adding to the dark, shadowy attitude of the opening. The mise-en-scene is shadowy and ghostly, perfectly instinct with the synopsis of our opening. The only light showing is small, connoting fear and anticipation as these are common reactions to the dark within films and even, for some, in reality. This real aspects allows the audiences to relate to the film.

  3. The mid-shot shows the father growing more and more agitated by her daughter. The camera work shows a realistic perspective, allowing the audience to relate to the action happening. The camera shot is deliberately shot from Lucy’s point of view, allowing the audience an incite into her perspective. The credits being placed over the action are there to demonstrate each role we played when creating this production. The font, we felt, shows sophistication, maybe too much to the extent that it’s unusual, considering the situation, to the production. The sound of the song in the background is only piano, connoting spooky and fearful aspects to this scene. Lucy’s voice also adds to this with the idea of a small, innocent girl going on to become a potential murderer. The mise-en-scene of a traditional British kitchen allows the audience to relate to the action through this as they’ve all been in that situation, but the action in the film is what makes it different.

  4. This mid-high shot shows my character as the mother committing suicide. This unusual content shocks the audience, especially considering the normal environment of the mise-en-scene. This intimate surrounding connotes casual content, but when mixed with a shocked situation such as death, the surrounding becomes uncomfortable and unnerving. A couple seconds before this shot, me and Lucy added a slow-down effect adding the audience’s perspective on the situation. This slow pace allows the audience to stop and think about the situation, giving them time to consider their feelings towards the situation. The sounds hears Lucy shouting “mummy” at me. This along with the slow, sorrow music in the background adds the sad situation being undertook.

  5. This close-up shot of Lucy shows her now as a teenager. Her dark hair and reasonably dark make-up connotes rebellion and mistreatment. The scenes from the flashback suggest that her too would have been abused as a child. This shocking situation is what makes the audience sympathise with her. The mise-en-scene of a scruffy pathway connotes rebellion; due to their adolescence they choose to go against that society believes to be appropriate and good, and instead stand in scruffy pathways where they can commit anti-social behaviour and activities. The shock from a the mid-high shot from the last scene to this close-up ensures the audience is aware of a significant change, in this case Lucy’s age and attitude within the scene.

  6. This over-the-shoulder shot shows Jack and Sam conversing about Lucy and the realisation they’ve had about her strange attitude. Each of these shots displays a priority shot for the audience – they’re able to see the reactions of the characters who are experiencing Lucy’s character first-hand. These reactions allow the audience to make their minds up about the future of Lucy’s character by evaluating each reaction carefully. Also, the same mise-en-scene suggest that all the characters are of the same low-class and represent the rebellion of British teenagers by hanging around in scruffy pathways. After this shot and the two characters walk away music starts to play in the background. This music is an instrumental re-made version of Rihanna and Eminem’s song ‘Love The Way You Lie’. The tempo of the song continues to connote anti-social behaviour and rebellion.

  7. Lucy’s character in this shot lights a cigarette, displaying underage, illegal activity and shows rebellion of the character. The shot is a mid shot at a straight angle, giving the audience a perfect position to view the character and thus make judgement on her due to her undertakings. The scene is again a scruffy pathway, connoting the rebellion of the teens and displaying their lower-class status. Common reasons for people to smoke, particularly teenagers is due to stress or to look ‘cool’ in front of peers. It seems that for Lucy’s character it’s a combination of both. Again her clothing and hair is dark, suggesting a shadowy, twisted personality to the character. The music continues with the same re-make from SoundCloud and contributes to the idea of the teenagers being anti-social.

  8. This over-the-shoulder shot displays Lucy’s character stabbing into a picture frame of Sam as her friend and her father who abused her mother. The high angle of the shot suggests the superiority of the audience along with the lower status of her character. This could be due to her age; being a teenager or a young adult is considered a less desirable age than some. It could be to do with the aspects of her character, such as smoking, that show her lower class. However, it is most likely to be due to the instability of her mental health; having a mental condition has seriously harm your status and role within society and this displays a prime example. This shot was taken within a bedroom. This intimate place suggests a fragile surrounding. Also, the idea that she is comfortable to go casually into her deceased mother’s room and look through pictures of her is quite unnerving, arguably only someone with an unstable mental health would be able to do.

  9. This is the last shot we see of our media production. The mise-en-scene is outside an average house, allowing the audience to relate to the character. She’s looking at a knife, a weapon able to kill someone, this plays a major role in ensuring our production can be classed as a ‘thriller’; the concept of death and murder thrills and shocks people. The mid-shot shows the top half of Lucy and then goes onto panning down her body to reveal the knife fully. This slow camera action ensures the audience are anticipating what is going to happen next. After this shot the music stops in a jaunty fashion almost jaunting the audience as it happens, something the audience doesn’t expect to happen and therefore puts them on edge.
