3GPP2 & OMA working together • We already do – but could do more. • OMA and 3GPP2 are complementary • 3GPP2 scope: • 3G based on evolved ANSI/TIA/EIA-41 core networks and the radio access technologies that they support • Covers wireless access protocols, network protocols, core network, terminal aspects, security aspects, etc. • OMA scope is • Defining application enablers for the mobile domain enabling interoperable mobile services across markets, operators and mobile terminals, with geographic and inter-generational roaming. • Agnostic to mobile network types and bearers, e.g. GSM, GPRS, WCDMA, etc. • Agnostic to operating system, and other platform issues.
The benefits of 3GPP2 & OMA working together • Together 3GPP2 and OMA can enable new and improved services to the market • Together covering the network and application delivery pieces • 3GPP2 and OMA can leverage the expertise of the combined skill pool. • Duplication of any effort is wasteful and detrimental to the market • Risks bifurcation, conflicting approaches, etc. • OMA and 3GPP2 have a significant common membership • Makes sense for members to do any one piece of work once in one organisation.
How should 3GPP2 and OMA work together ? • Leveraging “Openness” and, if desired/needed, a cooperation framework • Access to work in progress between technical groups • Easy means to exchange views via liaison process. • Ability to submit inputs • Ability to have mutual observers if needed • Etc. • Leveraging significant common membership • Important adjunct to the cooperation framework
How should 3GPP2 and OMA work together ? • Cooperatively - leveraging the work and capabilities of both organisations • OMA service enablers leveraging 3GPP2 specified networks bearers and protocols • OMA service enablers services leveraging 3GPP2 specified network services • 3GPP2 can provide any additional network and network services to enable or benefit OMA specified services. • OMA and 3GPP2 may cooperate to: • Ensure application enablers use network resources appropriately. • Apply the skills & capabilities of both organisations towards a common goal. • Avoiding duplication and conflicting work by: • Exchanging new work proposals early to avoid duplication/conflict • Consulting and agreeing on the best approach to deliver the technical work
Proposal for consideration • Recognise the pros and cons of working closely together. • Recognise that together we can enable new and improved services thereby benefiting the market. • Recognise there are few barriers to working closely together. • Consider the points raised re “exploiting the strengths” and “avoiding duplication and conflict”. • If supported make appropriate representations to our mutual organisations. • Build on our existing cooperative working.
