  1. Here you select the databases you want to offer for searching, as well as how they are depicted on screen and which are selected by default. Journal browsing is a component you can choose to use or not. Likewise, this component illustrates the use of an RSS feed to keep the homepage fresh andengaging, but it’s optional.

  2. The hit counts are automatically updated. This, along with the “searching” animation, are here to give users feedback that the system is working. In this instance, we are also searching metadata harvested from the NSDL, which we can have appear in its own sidebar. This is optional.

  3. Results can also be browsed byindividual database (see nextscreen). When the search is complete, the top- ranked results from all sources (30 each) Automatically populate this area. Notice the links to full-text when we know it is available.
