Petromaks KMB:Electric power systems for subsea processing and transportation of oil and gas KMB Power Systems project: Objectives and preliminary results Presentation March 2009
KMB Power Systems • Principal objective: • Establish a national competence centre on design, analysis, verification and safe operation of electric power supply systems for subsea control, processing and transportation systems for oil and gas exploration Generic project, placing emphasis on basic competence and methodology applicable for simulation and analysis of subsea electric power systems
KMB Power Systems: Project contents • Fundamental issues: • System operation • Component stress • Component interaction Vision: To model and simulate the complete subsea electric power system from topside to seabed installations during normal, overload and fault conditions • Applicability: • Design • Analysis • Verification • Safe operation • Pinpoint inadequate or missing • Analysis tools and methodology • Models • Develop and/or improve System Components
KMB Power Systems: Some preliminary results • Transformer • Methodology for generating wide band model of transformer applicable for time domain simulations based on transformer measurements • Evaluation of PSCAD transformer model’s applicability for phenomena analysis like inrush current • Power umbilical • - Thermal modelling of cable in air (riser): Accuracy assessment of numerical methods compared to measurements • Accuracy assessment of electrical parameter calculations (R, X @ 50, 100 and 200Hz) by 2D FEM software compared to measurements • Method (software) for generating wide band model for time domain simulation of power umbilical based on geometry and material parameters
KMB Power Systems: Some preliminary results • Matrix Fitting Toolbox (software) developed • Multi-port modeling from admittance (Y-) and scattering (S-) parameters • Advanced methods: Documented in 4 journal papers
KMB Power Systems: Other issues included • Phenomenon studies • Identify phenomena that can interfere with system operation. Mitigation strategies. • Benchmark systems • Define cases suitable for testing the applicability of topologies, components, control schemes etc • Methodology and guidelines • Incorporate and make use of relevant project results in guidelines for design and verification, including evaluation of methodology and relevant existing standards and guidelines • New system concepts • - Demonstrate new or improved solutions for subsea power supply 6
KMB Power Systems: Future activities (new projects) • Generic transformer simulation model • Combining low frequency characteristics and wide-band modelling • Refine methodology for model parameter extraction • Refined power umbilical simulation model • More accurate representation of electrical parameters as well as wide-band modelling • Refine methodology for model parameter extraction 7
