  1. Challenges and healthy ageing: the role of resilience across the life course 1st Meeting of ResNet 19th May, 2009 Bangor University

  2. Background • Mental capital, mental health and well-being • Markers for the ageing process • Interventions that promote healthy ageing and independence in later life • Interactions between determinants of healthy ageing – to improve the understanding of the interplay between factors that influence healthy ageing, resilience and well-being.

  3. Background • “Collaborative development networks to build research capacity and capability by establishing multi-disciplinary partnerships that are focused on developing a research strategy within the research priority areas”

  4. ResNet - Aims • To unite and build upon previous work and existing evidence undertaken on resilience, and strengthen this with new perspectives and collaborations, thereby enhancing research capacity and development. • To develop a research, knowledge transfer and dissemination strategy and subsequent research bids that reflect a multi-disciplinary life course perspective to healthy ageing. • To generate new knowledge for research, policy and practice on the multi-layered complexities of the ageing process and resilience which cannot be understood from a single disciplinary perspective.

  5. ResNet: Research Questions • To what extent is resilience determined by community, individual and biological characteristics? • How can resilience best be defined and measured in order to inform research, policy and practice? • How can resilience be developed, maintained and enhanced to reduce health and social inequalities and achieve healthy ageing across the life-course? • How do life course experiences influence health and resilience?

  6. How will the research questions be answered? • Consider working definition(s) and measurement(s) of resilience from a biopsychosocial perspective • Identify resiliency factors earlier in the life course that affect resilience to challenges and inequalities in later life • Investigate the role of government policies • Explore the relationship between resilience and cognitive impairment • Ensure the full integration of policy, practice, lay perspectives and research • Build partnerships with other research networks and associates • Review the potential of existing datasets to examine resilience • Identify potential interventions • Use the programme of work to facilitate the development of research proposals which address current gaps in knowledge • Ensure knowledge transfer is embedded within our work processes, which include integrated as well as end of grant activities

  7. ResNet: Work plan

  8. Scientific Meeting 1 - Definitions and determinants of resilience Academic partners: • Previous and current research on resilience • Own research area and how it fits in within this network. Stakeholder/lay member partners: • How you would define resilience • What factors from your experiences (work or life) you feel may enhance resilience • What factors from your experiences (work or life) you feel may be detrimental to resilience • How you think resilience can support healthy ageing
