Background…… • Born September 1, 1950 in Vinita, Oklahoma. • Attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Mission, Kansas. • Got a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas after being injured on a football scholarship at the University of Tulsa. • Four years later; master’s degree in experimental psychology and a Ph. D in clinical psychology at the University of North Texas. • Been married twice, his present wife is Robin McGraw; two sons named Jay and Jordan.

The Making of Dr. Phil… • Realized private practice wasn’t for him. • Seminar “Pathways” • After leaving private practice he then founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. • As the president of CSI, he advised Fortune 500 companies and injured plaintiffs alike in achieving settlements. • This venture helped trial lawyers build cases using psychology by conducting mock trials, behavioral analysis, jury selection, and mediation.

The Making of Dr. Phil (con’t) • Through Courtroom Sciences Dr. Phil met Oprah Winfrey in 1996. • In helping Oprah with the trial, she became impressed with his work and their victory that soon after she invited him to appear on her show. • His appearance on the show was such a success that he began appearing weekly as a “Relationship and Life Strategy Expert” on Tuesdays starting in April of 1998. • On September 16, 2002, he launched his own daily television show called Dr. Phil, produced by Oprah’s production company Harpo Studios.
