Orbitals

Orbitals. An orbital is a region where there is a high probability of finding an electron. There are three main types of orbitals; S orbitals . P orbitals . D orbitals. S orbitals are spherical. P orbitals are dumb-bell shaped. There are three p orbitals at right angles to each other.

  1. Orbitals • An orbital is a region where there is a high probability of finding an electron. • There are three main types of orbitals; • S orbitals. • P orbitals. • D orbitals.

  2. S orbitalsare spherical

  3. P orbitalsare dumb-bell shaped.

  4. There are three p orbitals at right angles to each other.

  5. There are five d orbitals

  6. Shells, sub-shells and orbitals • Shells are divided into sub-shells. • Eg; The third shell has an ssub-shell, a p sub-shell and a d sub-shell. • Sub-shells are made up of orbitals. • Eg; A d sub-shell contains 5 d orbitals, a p sub shell has 3 p orbitals, an s sub shell has 1 s orbital.
