Taxonomisch overzicht van de thee-familie. • Camellia 82 tot 270 soorten in tropisch en subtropisch Oost Azie • Cleyera 17 soorten waarvan 1 Oost-Azie, de rest Midden-Amerika • Eurya 130 soorten overwegend tropisch Azie en eilanden Stille Zuidzee • Franklinia 1 soort uit Noord-Amerika • Gordonia 40 soorten hoofdzakelijk tropisch Azie • Stewartia 7 – 10 soorten in Noordoost-Amerika en Oost Azie • Ternstroemia 100 soorten in tropisch Azie en Amerika, 1 soort in Japan • Visnea 1 soort op Madeira en Canarische eilanden • Camellia kan weer worden onderverdeeld in 4 subgenera met 20 secties • Camellia • Protocamellia • Metacamellia • Thea

  3. Camellia omvat 82 tot 270 soorten. De grote meerderheid is niet winterhard. Camellia cuphuongensis in provinciaal domein “Het Leen” in Eeklo. Dit zeldzame chinese species is volstrekt niet winterhard. Hetgeen jammer is, want de bloemkleur is opmerkelijk.

  4. De West-chinese Camellia cuspidata is zeer winterhard. Gebruikt als kruisingsouder voor het maken van winterharde cultivars.

  5. Camellia hiemalis wordt ook wel de Chinese sasanqua genoemd. Deze goed winterharde soort bloeit in de late herfst of de vroege winter met enkele of dubbele geurende bloemen.

  6. Camellia japonica is met afstand het belangrijkste species binnen dit geslacht, als tuinplant. Economisch is natuurlijk Camellia sinensis nog belangrijker.
