  1. Characteristics of Christ Figures (Typical things to look for)

  2. What does Christ mean? • A Messiah = a deliverer; a liberator • An ideal type of person, someone to emulate

  3. Characteristics of a Christ Figure • Doesn’t fit in • Rejected by others • Preaches and practices peace and sacrifice • Possesses “inhuman” qualities • Dies for the “new life” of others • May speak from the grave – “resurrection”

  4. Characteristics explained: Not fitting in • Brings a new truth, an alien idea • Tries to change things • Stands up to authority (sometimes very simply) • Refuses to accept the status quo • Romantic view of world—sees the way things should be, not the way they are.

  5. Characteristics explained: Rejection by others • Encounters conflict with authority; is misunderstood. • Threatens the established structure of things • Betrayed by those he trusts but forgives them. • Not rejected by EVERYONE; affects a minority; lives on in his or her effect on others.

  6. Characteristics explained: Dies for others • Puts others ahead of himself • Transforms others; encourages others’ growth • Is a leader who serves • Noblesse Oblige = nobility obligates

  7. Some descriptions of Christ figures • Isn’t concerned with feasibility; will try to move the immovable, do the impossible. • Rebellious; out of place; perceived as weird or threatening. • Personal sense of morality, NOT likely simply to follow • Leads through conviction and modeling
