  3. Purpose of Bell Work and Exit Slip • Daily Practice in Writing • Teaches witten communication • It is Writing to Learn • Writing to Demonstrate Learning • Writing for Authentic Purpose

  4. I CAN…. • I can evaluate the positive and negative impact of food selections that contain essential nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, water) on maintaining and promoting health.

  5. I CAN…. • I can explain key recommendations made in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, including recommendations for specific population groups and how these recommendations contribute to good health.

  7. Choosing Food Wisely:Eating Out

  8. Review: • Nutrition – process in which we take in and use food. • Nutrient – Components of food that supplies us with energy, serve as building material, help maintain or repair body parts and support growth. • Basic Nutrients: 1) Proteins, 2) Carbohydrates, 3) Fats, 4) Vitamins, 5) Minerals, and 6) Water • Calorie - A unit used to measure the energy used by the body, and the energy that food supplies the body.

  9. Why Do We Need To Eat? • To supply your body with energy • To meet your nutritional needs • To satisfy our hunger • To satisfy our appetite

Hunger vs Appetite • Hunger is a feeling of physical discomfort that is caused by the body’s need for nutrients. • Appetite is a desire for food that is based on emotions and other factors rather than nutritional need. Unlike hunger, which is an inborn response, appetite is learned. (example: popcorn at the movies)

  11. Why We Choose Fast Foods • Time and Convenience • Personal Preferences (Taste) • Friends • The Media • Nutritional Value (Activity)

  12. Daily Recommendations 1600-2000Calories a day is recommended. (Women 1600-1800 Males 1800-2000) 70 -80 Fat Grams a day is recommended.

  13. Activity Assignment Write a summary of your calorie and fat intake for your meal. Please Include: - Total number of calories and fat - Reasons for selecting your items - How you compare to your daily recommendations (Group Discussion)

  14. Tips For Eating Out • Drink Water • Fat Free or Low Fat Milk • Unsweetened Tea • Drinks without Sugars • Whole Wheat Bread • Start meal with a Salad

  15. Tips con’t • Order steamed or grilled dishes • Choose smaller portions (regular size) • Ask for salad dressing to be served on the side • Little or no butter • Choose fruits for dessert

  16. Tips con’t • Order Lean Meats (chicken, turkey, roast beef) • Remove chicken skin, mayonnaise, and dressing • Avoid dishes dripping with sauce • Avoid deep fried or breaded sandwiches

  17. Tips con’t • Get rid of toppings (cheese, croutons, bacon bits) • Add more vegetables, mustard, pickles • Eat fresh made to order foods when possible • Exercise/Activity

  18. Conclusion • Since 1980 obesity rates among adolescents has almost tripled. • Fast food is part of everyday life. We live in a fast paced society. • Its our choice on how to make healthy food choices while we eat out.

  19. Exit Slip • Based on today’s lesson how can you improve your habits while eating out at a restaurant. Please justify your response and include 3 -5 examples in paragraph form.
