MCC v5.03 MCC v5.03 Complete Installation and Usage Training Module 1. First Time Installation of MCC Release 1.0 April 2008
MCC 5.03 Some new features have been added to MCC since the previous intermediate release (v4.02). New features discussed in this module are listed below • Support Windows Vista for Management Console & Package Studio.
Mobile Control Centre: Module 1 At the end of this Module the student will be able to: Fully Install “MCC Manager” and its related parts (“Package Studio” and “Deployment Server”) onto Windows Server, or Windows XP, or Windows Vista. Note: You are recommended to install MCC on to your own laptop, notebook, or desktop PC for self study purposes whilst using these training materials.
Mobile Control Center Please Note: This training is designed as a guide to help you to understand the order in which things are to be done with Mobile Control Centre. MCC has an excellent built in Tutorial fully explaining all of the steps required to successfully use MCC but you cannot access it until after MCC is installed. Also, as with all new software it is usually difficult to know where to start. This training should hopefully answer that question and more.
Mobile Control Center Quick Start Training Guide This Training has been designed to guide you through the installation of the new MCC software which may be used to manage Windows CE .NET and Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 5.0 & 6.0) devices. This first part guide will assist you to install MCC onto a Windows Server, Windows XP or Vista machine.
Mobile Control Center You are recommended to first obtain the MCC installation application and then follow these training notes. This training is not designed to be read “stand alone” without having the MCC application available. The ideal situation would be to view this training on one PC whilst installing the software onto another machine. If this is not possible have both open in separate windows and swap between them as needed.
Mobile Control Center Mobile Control Center uses a database to store configuration information. When installing Mobile Control Center, you can install the database on the same computer on which other Mobile Control Center components are installed, or you can install the database on a separate machine. Mobile Control Center currently supports the following databases: • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 • Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine 2000 (i.e. MSDE 2000) • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (the free version)
Mobile Control Center The Mobile Control Center installation program can configure the Mobile Control Center database on an existing database server or it can install the free SQL 2005 Express database (can be included in the setup program) and then configure the database. Mobile Control Center includes the following two setup program options: • Mobile Control CenterxxxSetup.exe • Mobile Control CenterxxxDBSetup.exe:
Mobile Control Center Mobile Control CenterxxxSetup.exe : This setup program allows you to use an existing database server Mobile Control CenterxxxDBSetup.exe: This setup program includes the SQL 2005 Express database, it can install and configure the Mobile Control Center database inside SQL 2005 or it can configure the Mobile Control Center database in an existing database server. Note: xxx is the 3 digit Mobile Control Center version number, e.g. v5.03 (503)
Mobile Control Center To install Mobile Control Center select, and run, the appropriate setup program and follow the instructions. You will find a guide through the expected process commencing on the next slide.
MCC Installation Process Once you double-click the setup file you will see this screen showing that the relevant files are being extracted ready for the installation to continue.
MCC Installation Process After clicking “Next” the following slide shows the three main components of Mobile Control Centre that will be installed onto your server or PC.
Mobile Control Center During installation you will be given a choiceas to whether to install the MS SQL 2005 Express server software or to use an existing SQL server if you have one later during the install process.
MCC Installation Process This and the following three screens are just for information and give a list of the features that will be available once MCC is installed.
Accept License Agreement Please read the License Agreement carefully. To install Mobile Control Center, you need to accept the license agreement.
User Information On this dialog box, enter your name and company information and click on the next button.
Installation Directory Mobile Control Centre software will be saved in the default folder. You are advised to accept this choice but you may click on “Browse” and select a different folder if you wish.
Select Setup Type (Full or Custom) Now select one of the installation options. The table on the next slide explains the options in more detail. You are advised to select full installation
Select Setup Type (Full or Custom) Full Installation: This option installs all MCC Components. Custom Installation: This option allows you to select individual components to allow installation of just the MCC Manager and/or Package Studio on to different machines. (PTX Technical personnel are advised to select “full installation” onto your own PC in order to get the most from this training, and to be able to use MCC)
MCC Installation Options • Selecting “Custom” will give the screen as shown on the next slide…..
MCC Installation Options Use these options only if you do not want to make a complete installation of MCC.
Select Database Options NOTE: You will only see the next page if you are running the version of the MCC setup program that includes the SQL 2005 Express. This screen allows you to either install the Microsoft SQL 2005 Server Express or use an existing database server. If you decide to install SQL 2005 Express you will also see the following screen. If you do not install SQL 2005 Express you will be asked to configure a database connection to an existing database server. The Setup program will then configure the Mobile Control Center database on that database server.
Select Database Options Installing the SQL 2005 Express server makes for the easiest installation. Make your choice and then click “next”.
MCC Installation Options NOTE: You are strongly advised to heed this warning. We all get a little complacent at times, and often ignore such warnings, but when installing something as important as SQL you really should close all other applications on that machine
Create Password for MSDE Enter a password for the database that Mobile Control Center will create once it installs SQL 2005 Express. Important Note: Please see next slide before clicking “Next” on this screen.
MCC Installation Process Please Note: If you only use a short password at this point the installation will fail during the latter stages with the following resultant messages: If you do get these messages you would need to reboot, and restart the installation as indicated by the second message.
MCC Installation Process • Now select a Site Name for this installation. • Ideally this name should be specific to the installation site, e.g. the customers name, or location. • See next slide for more info.
MCC Installation Process NOTE: Devices with preloaded Agents have “MCC” as the site name. If you want to discover them “straight out of the box” you will need to set the site name for the MCC installation as “MCC” also. You should also then check that the agent is correctly configured to meet the site needs. A preloaded agent may not be correctly configured to suit your particular site.
MCC Installation Process You are now given the option to assign a suitable name for the deployment server. This can be useful if for any reason you have multiple servers installed.
MCC Installation Process Select the network type the mobile devices are To be connected to. Slow Network: use if you plan to manage any devices over WWAN. Fast Network: use this choice if you plan to manage devices that are in the WLAN only
MCC Installation Process This is a summary screen showing what settings have currently been selected. A full list is shown on the next slide. Select Next to accept or Back to change any of the settings.
