Today’s objectives • Teachers will explore changes in the standards for mathematics instruction at each grade level. • Teachers will experience examples of mathematical practices that encourage student habits of mind.
Curriculum Review Committee Members THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR TIME AND HARD WORK!
These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in the workforce. • Greater coherence and focus which means fewer things to concentrate on at a given grade so students can internalize practice. K-12
Practice Standards • 8 habits of mind for students • How students should engage with mathematics • Content Standards • Are clear, understandable and consistent; • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills • Balanced combination of procedure and understanding • Practice and Content Standards need to be connected in instruction.
Grade Level Overview Please use the guide below to indicate your comfort level with the Overview for your grade level. O = Naturally Occurring C= Challenging, but do-able S= Needs support
Emphasis Documents • The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of changes in emphasis as Pennsylvania transitions from the PA Academic Standards to the Common Core State Standards. This is not intended to be a curriculum guide - only to identify shifts in emphasis of instruction. • Pennsylvania Department of Education
Martha had 32 pansies and 24 daffodils. She planted 40 of them. How many more does she have to plant?
Practice Standards • Each group will use the CCSS Mathematical Practice Standards for Elementary School documenttoinvestigate ONE of the standards • As you read the information, jot down an explanation and discuss in your group what you are already doingor could do that addresses the practice standard. Record some examples and be ready to explain your practice to others. • Regroup by forming a group with a person representing each of the practice standards (there should be 8 of you in your group). Take turns sharing the information on each Practice Standard (all 8 should be covered). Feel free to jot down examples/ideas on the handout provided.
Future Plans • Committee members will update their work at faculty meetings • In-service time next year will be dedicated to mathematics and addressing these changes.
