Time Management &Time Leadership TipsTo BecomeA World-Class Student By Dr. Ronak Shodhan January 18, 2003
Special Thanks • Mr. Vikram Sorathia, PhD student, DA-IICT • Mr. Sanjiv Shah – a great thinker and doer • Mr. Brian Tracy – master of TM • Mr. Nitin Doshi – Book Plaza • All of you – my “villains” • The MBS team – For catching my BLUFF!
What is Time? • Is it a resource? • Is it a concept? • Can it be really managed? • What are its characteristics? • Successful persons’ perceptions of Time
What and What wait for Nobody? • Time and Tide, of course!! • Time CANNOT BE MANAGED.. Period. • The presentation is over … you can leave the room. • How can you manage something that is not in your control??
But wait for a second… • Your actions can be managed. • Your thoughts can be managed. • Your plans can be managed. • Your life can be managed. In short, Time Management = Life Management
Let’s Accept the fact • Time was, is and will always be our boss. • We must try to understand its behavior and plan our actions accordingly. • Constant wrestling match between You and Mr. T. Either you are on Top or Mr. T will be on Top.. • Where do you want to be?
Are These Your Problems ? • I’m ambitious but unable to fulfill all that I wish to do • I’m a student and have a problem of concentration. • I’m always surrounded by crises in life • None of my plans have worked so far. • Never can I finish any task in its stipulated time.
Why an average student is always under Time Stress? Think of a Play Script where • Student is an actor – Hero of our story!! • Who has to play a lot of roles • Has many courses • Has goals for each course • Has made plans for each course • And is happy at the beginning of the semester
Why an average student is always under Time Stress? Now think of the “Villains” and “Dirty Jobs” • Professors – too many • Homework, Quizzes, Exams, lectures, labs • Due Dates • Friends who like to Party • Temptations – sleep, movies, etc. • Etc.
Why an average student is always under Time Stress? Now think of the Twist of Luck • Dead Lines - Limited Time • Limited info store/process capability • Parents’ high expectations • Conflicts within priorities • Confusion • Etc.
Why an average student is always under Time Stress? The End Result: • Our hero is bloodied by the blows of all the “nice things” he wanted to accomplish.. • He is depressed, under tremendous stress and basically is living one moment to the other by the time the end of the semester comes.. • All the negative feelings start devouring his mind… worries, fear, depression, despair, etc.
Are you • one of these students? • If not, Great for you.. You can leave this presentation or replace me here.. You deserve the applause… • But, If yes… you need help… very very solid and sincere help..
Good News • Every one can learn the techniques of Time Management – which we will call from now on wards, Life management. • This is an acquired Skill and not a sign of a gifted person • Any one, who wants to use Time to make his dreams come true, REALLY CAN!!
Let us Pause for some thoughts • Attitude of a person determines his altitude. • If you do not know where you are going, you will end up exactly there. • World gives way to a person who knows where he is going • If you want to fly with an Eagle, do not scratch the earth with the Turkeys. • There is no better time to start managing time than right this instance.. Right this moment!!
Let us Pause for some thoughts • Take a close look at T I M E.. • What do you see? • I see that Time is shouting loud and clear T for Try Harder I for Imagine (Dream, Vision) M for make it happen – perseverance E for Excellence
Let us Pause for some thoughts • Some times, TIME takes on different colors • T for To • I for Improve • M for My • E for Efficiency and Effectiveness In other words, TIME tells me use me to be the best you can!!
Let us Pause for some thoughts • This is for you to feel in your interpretaion of TIME: • T • I • M • E
Let us Pause for some thoughts • The Million dollar question is • Are you listening to the cries of passing moments? • Are you even aware that each fleeting moment passing by takes away with it a golden opportunity for you to be a world-class student? • The passed moment will never be bought or brought back… That is the absolute truth!! • Looking at all of you, How I wish that I also be your age… with the wisdom I have today, perhaps I can rewrite my own history…
To Summarize • Time management deals with efficiency of our actions in using available resources to make the most of the available time And • Time Leadership deals with the effectiveness of our actions in using available resources to make the most of the available time
VISION • First and foremost step to be on top of Mr. T is to have a vision – a life vision. • Vision gives you a long term perspective as a student.. • Every successful student has a vision • Vision shapes our plans and actions, it gives purpose for our actions, it gives the FOCUS
Mission Statement • Second important step for Time management is to have a Mission Statement • Identify how you want to achieve your vision, what actions you want to carry out in general so that your life becomes valuable to the mankind and your parents become proud of you
Self-Evaluation • Carry out a self-evaluation and find out where the weaknesses are.. • Use the given worksheet and see where you stand.. • Don’t worry what you score is… from now onwards, it is going to get better and better and better • Most Important thing is to find out your current location or status • The competition is only with yourself
